pisa or firenze for teenagers?

having read people's messages I'm confused. Is Pisa a dump or beautiful? Is it better to stay in Firenze or even Sienna? What's to see in Sienna for 4 teenagers?

The only thing interesting in Pisa is the Leaning Tower...other than that is just Average..Stay in Florence, much prettier, more things to do and see...

I think Pisa is interesting and lovely. in my opinion, people often look quickly at the tower area and the tacky souvenier stands surrounding the plaza and say "too touristy". The tower is worth seeing but the town is even more worthwhile. If you take the time to walk through town to the tower area you will discover a charming Italian town. There's a very good travel journal on www.igougo.com. Just enter "pisa" into the search bar.

I just read your post more carefully. By all means, stay in Florence. Take the one hour train ride to Pisa. Siena is beautiful and interesting but not so much to do for teens as Florence.

I agree with Grasshopper. I think it is worth it to make the effort to see the Leaning Tower, especially if it is your first time to Italy. It is something you've always heard about and seen photos of. We stayed in Florence and took the train over to Pisa for the afternoon. And yes, the souvenier stands are tacky, but I got alot of compliments last Sunday at church when I wore the $5 scarf I bought at the Tower!!

Pisa will be more interesting for teenagers, I think. They'll see one of the wonders of the world, which will give them bragging rights with their friends -- and there were a lot of young people there when we visited. If you're looking for a homebase, I suggest Lucca. It's just about our favorite small city, home of Puccini, with a lovely wall that surronds the medieval center and a plaza that still reflects the architecture of the stadium where gladiators fought. The It's about a 30 mninute to Pisa. The pretty hotel Puccini is inexpensive ... a real bargain. Hope this helps
