Pisa-Nice by Train Feasible in One Day?

What great info. you all provide. This is my first visit to Fodors - and my first experience planning travel in Italy and France. Can we realistically/conveniently go from Florence or Pisa to Nice by train in ONE day? Routing on the Eurorail website went north to Milan before going to Nice. It looked like I could plan individual segments through Pisa and along the coast. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks so much for aiding a nervous traveller.

I did a coach tour and made this exact connection. Yes it si very doable as far as travelling time is concerned. The actual drive/trip should be not more than about 4 hours even with a stop. However this was on our own private minibus. I guess it depends on the train schedules. Don't be nervous!!!

No problem doing Pisa to Nice via the coast. Look at www.sncf.com - - but it may not be as scenic as you think. The drive is the most amazing collection of tunnels you ever saw - - 150 of them in all...

Lynne,
No problem in getting from Pisa to Nice. Many trains started early in the morning; many will require two changes (Genova and Ventimiglia) but I would look for ones that have only a single change in Genova; also the ones that don't stop dreadfully often or it WILL take all day. Look at the following website for train times (no prices here but everything else).

Notice, no www. Put in the places and the dates of travel and voila!
Have a good time.

Fodors

Dear Ms Rahn,

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. The Jnuary issue showed the basic second class fatre from Rome to Nice as 52 US dollars, so from Pisa it might be 45 dollars. Table 90 has the trains.

Pisa Central 1500, restaurant car express, Genoa 1641 to 1656, buffet car train, Nice 1956. 5 hours.
Pisa 1623, buffet car train, Ventimiglia 2037 to 2140 (time enough for supper), Nice 2247. 6 hours 24 minutes
Pisa 0244, train with 6-berth couchette compartments and 3-berth sleepers, Nice 0950. 7 hours, but in bed.
The day trains carry small supplements.

You are right: we on Fodors like to get it right. Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London
