Pisa and the beach
 

Very last minute question...are there any beaches around Pisa? We are going to have a free day in Florence, so we were planning to go to Pisa. We would really like to try to go to a beach also/instead. Any ideas? Thanks!

Viareggio might be a better choice.

If you want a spa town instead, Montecatini Terme is close to Florence.

Ok. I saw a lot of positive things about Tirrenia also. Thanks again, your insight is so helpful...also have to ask if you are from Kentucky based on your screen name. Only asking because we are very close. It's literally the eleventh hour and I am still researching this trip! Time to just let it be and go with the flow!

I think the logistics of getting to the beach at Viareggio might be easier than Tirrenia. Perhaps a train or bus (Terravision bus Florence/Pisa airport is about 5€) to the Pisa airport and taxi from there to Tirrenia?

Train station in Viareggio would be about a mile walk to the beach. There is probably a bus option Florence/Viareggio with either Lazzi or Vai.

I agree. Viareggio sounds like the better option. We will find out about a bus.
We are just across the bridge in Ohio. What a great ancestor to have!

I have relatives in Cincy. I'm in the Lexington area.

I've used the Lazzi bus from Florence to Lucca, but it's been a few years. At that time, you caught it right across the street from the train station. Facing the station, with your back to the historic center of Florence, it was to the right. It seems to have moved a block or so off on a side street (or at least the ticket office) from the station near Hotel Alinari. The same bus should continue to Forte dei Marmi if you think that is a better option.
