Pisa - a tower question!
I read somewhere on the forum about a tower other than the Leaning Tower with a great view of Pisa located near the Arno. Can anyone tell me the name of the tower and how to get there from the train station? Also, if there's a website with additional info on it, I'd be interested.

Appreciate the help.

Bob

Bob,

Your question sent me on the hunt, and found the person who probably has the answer --- Dean. He posted following message on another thread about Pisa.

-- Author: dean
-- Date: 04/23/2002, 09:55 pm
Message: I was at the tower last July with my teenage nephews. The Campo di Miracoli was indeed crowded but we had no problem getting into the Duomo. The tower was not open but it was incredible looking at it. Instead of spending time in the shops, we explored the Campo Santo or the cemetary behind the Duomo. It has a spectacular fresco cycle, Il Triunfo di Morte which was an artistic highlight. We loved our lunch at Osteria dei Caveleri and the church nearby with 16th century batle flags from the battle of Lepanto. We visited a tower on the Arno where we had a wonderful view of the city. All in all Pisa was a wonderful day stop.
- - - - - - - - - -
SO, Dean, where is this tower?

Was it Santa Maria della Spina? This church is literally right on the side of the river--very striking and unusual. It is located on the other side of the river from the Campo dei Miracoli. You can't miss it!

Patti

.

Now that Dean gave the name, I went searching for Guelf Tower. Came up with a website re: tour guide in area and describes ... "Republican Arsenal with the Guelf Tower".

http://www.turislucca.com/pisauk.htm

Isn't there a tower in middle of Lucca with similar name? I know I hiked up several flights in some building to get a nice view of that city.

If you're thinking of the one with the tree on top of the tower in Lucca it's the Torre Guinigi. You can still climb it, but last I heard they were making repairs.

Thats the tower. Also, Santo Stefano dei Calvaleri is a superb church with battle flags from naval battles
