Piranhas in Dordogne?

My French in-laws insist that piranhas have been spotted in the Dordogne River - i poohpooh this - anyone know if there are piranhas in the Dordogne?

ira Jul 22nd, 2005 10:41 AM

Hi Pal,

It's true!

See http://tinyurl.com/7dcfd

No such site on my google - can you give me a brief on the site and how it says this is true? Or maybe you're pulling my leg? :)

And sharks all over the beaches of Austria - - north, south, wast and west!

;)

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex, are you pulling my leg? :) :)

julia_t Jul 22nd, 2005 11:50 AM

OK, Pal...

This amused me so much I did a google, and found the following with a reference to piranhas in the dordogne river!!

www.aujardin.org/sutra158417.html

Googling piranhas in dordogne also comes up with some sort of sports team (ira's ref works on my wanadoo [and that sounds really bad!]), but it's up to you to check that out. :-d

I think your in-laws are taking the p***!!!! Along with ira and rex!!!!

SNAP SNAP....

julia t - merci - that site you have is some kind of gardening sight for the area - but thanks.
My in-laws are dead serious about there being piranhas in the Dordogne, i think they even had an old news article saying something about it. I just think it must have been a one-time freak - coming out of the bilge of some ocean-going ship and not there always as they claim.

StCirq Jul 22nd, 2005 11:57 AM

Well, if julia's info on that URL is true, there'll be no more jumping off the canoe for me!!

julia_t Jul 22nd, 2005 12:19 PM

Pal - scroll down the opening page of that gardening site to a comment by Nathaline, fleur de pipelette (yes really!!!!) and you too can read her post of 10 June about piranhas in the river....

The bilge stuff could always have some truth in it.... maybe it's not just a load of old **** =D>

Anyway, you are not so safe in the UK - there are all these panthers and leopards running wild....

PalQ Jul 22nd, 2005 12:30 PM

Incroyable - extraordinaire - yes there are piranahas in the Dordogne! thanks for solving the mystery. the wonders of the Internet and Fodors. Ira, thanks too, guess you weren't pulling my leg! :) Again julia t thanks.

Maybe your in-laws are referring to Lamprey which is a specialty of Bordeaux but a far cry from piranha.

Michael Nov 21st, 2013 07:41 PM

i doubt that pirahnhas could survive a winter in the Dordogne.

janisj Nov 21st, 2013 07:44 PM

and you topped PQ's (two screen names ago) 8+ year old thread why exactly ?? >)

StCirq Nov 22nd, 2013 09:29 AM

Because there's a current thread about swimming pools in the Dordogne that morphed into a discussion about the pirhanas.

Any relationship to the alligators in the New York City sewers?

In a related story trout meunière has been spotted in the Amazon Basin.
