Pilatus round trip with Eurail pass
Luzern To pilatus round trip is free with Eurail??
Luzern to Alpnachstad with boat Pilatus Bhan to Pilatus Kulm with Cogwheel train Pilatus Kulm to kriens with cable car Is this trip is free with Eurail Pass?? Thank You Reply |
The only thing above free with a Eurailpass is the Luzern to Alpnachstad boat - zilch for the others - as on the other thread Swiss Passes would get 50% off those expensive Pilatus conveyances.
Are you only going to Switzerland - if so forget anything about a Eurailpass as the Swiss Pass is cheaper (contrary to your statement on the other thread) and covers much more. Now if your 6 days are part of a trip involving other countries then yes you may get by with just a Eurailpass and pay out of pocket for things like Pilatus. What are you overall trip plans - just Switzerland or more countries - sometimes a Swiss Pass is warranted even if you have a Eurailpass - just don't use the pass in Switzerland. |
Pilatus IME of being in Lucerne many times is often shrouded in fog or smog or clouds - keep your itinerary flexible as paying all that money to go to the top in cloudy climes is a waste. Even when skies were clear elsewhere I've seen Pilatus enshrouded in clouds or fog. If it's clear day hop on it. Mt Titlis however in Engleberg is much more an Alpine Wonderland of your dreams and I think trains there are fully covered by Eurailpasses (but not the unique revolving cable car to the top of Mt Titlis and a land of snow and ice - Pilatus is not nearly the Alpine Wonderland picture of the Swiss Alps perhaps etched in your mind's eye.
https://www.google.com/search?q=mt+t...w=1745&bih=868 Engelberg is a short train ride from Lucerne- a nice mountain trip after leaving the lake area. |
PalenQ is correct, sort of. With the Eurail Pass, you do get a discount for the cogwheel train up to Pilatus and the cable car down to Kriens, but if memory serves, it's a 30% discount, not 50% like the Swiss Pass.
Totally worth it, though! And don't forget, even if it's bathing suit weather at the bottom of the mountain, it can still be snow jacket weather at the top! |
Surfergal is right - the discount should be about 25-30% on the cog train up but no discount with Eurail on the cable car down to Kriens, according to my Swiss Pass map coverage map. Swiss Pass would give 50% on each and also fully cover bus from Kriens back to downtown Lucerne.
|
Oops - closer examination also shows as Supergal says the 25% or 30% discount is also valid on the cable cars down to Kriens. Sorry for mistake.
|
I suppose you know that there will be no boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad and no train from Alpnachstad to Pilatus before May
|
How about the cable car from Kriens - only after May - no way to go up Pilatus before May?
Thanks for your valuable info. |
I do note, surprisingly, on the Swiss Pass map of validity that though you get 50% off Alpnachstad but no discount for Kriens to Lucerne cable car! Most all cable cars are covered by Swiss Passes - weird that one is not - will have to re-check the map about that.
I did the boat to Alpnachstad then one of the most thrilling mountain trains to Pilatus - nice to do by boat though you can also take trains (covered in full by both passes as boats are) to Alpnahcstad much quicker. |
Lucerne city bus Lucerne - Kriens: runs all the year round, free with Swiss Travel Pass, half fare with Swiss Half Fare Card
cableway (gondola) Kriens - Fraekmuentegg - Pilatus Kulm: runs all the year round, except Oct 24th - Nov 11th 2016, 50 per cent reduction with Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/en/...html?id=137558 |
Maes sense that that cab le car is 50% off but my 2-yr old Swiss Pass map says no - neckervd as usual has given the current info and you can access Pilatus all year via Kriens - rack railways are sometimes taken down or protected from winter snows since they run on the ground.
Thanks neckervd! |
