Picos de Europe, Spain: hiking shoes a must?

Traveling through North of Spain, Picos being part of pretty varied itinenary, I wondered whether we should bring our hiking shoes (luggage for flight). Or can it be done on comfy sneakers? Advice is welcomed!

If you go off the black to then boots are a must in the Picos, this area was only really discovered in the late 1890s by the outside world and still bits were being found in the 1960s.

I tend to fly in mine if I'm going hiking to keep the weights down.

I have been caught by a freezing rain shower in August (very glad of the gear I had) so though they look small take them seriously.
