Picnics in Olive groves

I have grand plans of having an afternoon picnic in a beautiful olive grove in Greece. Where are some of the best places to find these groves? Are any of them public or do they allow visitors?

I am planning to spend most of my vacation time in the Peloppennese in late Sept/early Oct. so I'm curious if that is the same time that these trees might be harvested?

This sounds like a fabulous idea, and though I cannot help with actual places, I advise that wherever you end up, you make sure you have permission from the owner if he is around. In Spain we wanted to picnic in a grove, so we just found the house and asked if they minded, to which they replied "of course not" and even gave us oranges for dessert.

You might want to inquire whether the orchard has been sprayed lately. Insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides are all used on commercial olive trees (even over seas).

Oddly enough, eating at a farm can be hazardous to your health.

We asked about harvest time and found out the olives are harvested in December.

Hi,
Down here, around the Kitries area, you can wander in and out of the groves to your hearts content. If there are no fences or gates, then you are welcome. The picking season starts around November and continues thro to late Febuary. We picked ours in January. If there are 'bottles' hanging in the trees, then the area has been sprayed or fertilised, but as long as you don't eat the greenery in that area, you should be OK. We often go for a walk in the groves and the silence and peace are quiet deafening!!
Enjoy!!!
