Picking a hotel in Nice
 

I'm traveling to Nice in June and have looked at many hotels on the web. After awhile they all look the same. Does anyone have any suggestions for a hotel that is around 100-150usa dollars that is centered around the city without using a car to get around. I plan on going to cannes for a day, monaco for a day and maybe some of the outskirts. We want to just take in the flavor of the riveria. Any help would be great!

Try Hotel Flots D'Azur, Hotel Windsor, and Hotel Mercure. Also check to see if the Hotel Grimaldi has any specials, although I doubt they will in June.

Nice has an excellent transportation system, and it's actually a plus NOT to have a car. You can train to Cannes ( about 20 min) Monaco (30 min) and take a bus to St. Paul de Vence ( about 50 minutes from the main bus terminal).

We stayed at Hotel Windsor and liked it, but it was several years ago. Still, the location is great, the garden was very nice, and the top floor had a very nice spa. But would recommend passing on the breakfast-was expensive for what you get.

Last summer we stayed at the Windsor. It was great. The common rooms are very nice and the garden with a pool is delightful. Our room was large and fine, nothing special. The price was 100 Euros a night. I agree, do not get the breakfast. I did find out, on the last day, you can just get coffee for a lot less.

I checked out those rooms. While i was on there i saw two other hotels-has anyone heard anything good or bad...Villa victoria or hotel Suisse?

Your best bet is the Windsor.

Wanna cheap place? It's clean and generic, but does what it need to do. It's called "Mister Bed City". It is located near the old port. They do not have a website for Nice, but their phone number and fax are listed. They belong to a chain in France. Just do a "Mister Bed City" search on the internet if you are interested.

Paula, I have been to Nice three times..staying at the Primotel Suisse and the Hotel West End. I love the Primotel Suisse..great price, great location,good sized, clean rooms. One year, our luggage was lost (Alitalia) for 3 days and the desk clerks were so helpful in our attempts to locate our bags. It is next to La Perouse, much more $$, but still the same great view. West End was more plush, but I loved being so close to Old Nice and the whole location of this hotel. I love Nice!! Last year, we traveled from the Cinque Terre to Nice..you will have a great time!!

TripAdvisor.com has some reviews of the Primhotel Suisse that would give me pause--like cracks in the concrete on a balcony floor.

I checked out all the reviews on this site and trip advisor. I have to say...the balcony thing scared me a little, since if I were to stay there...I would like a balcony! The newer reviews seem to be all good. I contacted the hotel and asked for a top floor with a balcony. They responded they had the room for 150e...but when I tryed to make a reservation on Federal hotel.com...I couldn't get the site to bring up my hotel. What's a girl to do? The place does seem nice-I can picture myself with a glass of wine -overlooking the med., having cheese and crackers...
Allison-we also are going to Ct after Nice-I can't wait! Where did you stay in CT? How far is the trip to Ct from Nice? We are taking the train there. Thanks!

Paula, I'm not certain but I think it was about 4 hours by train to the Cinque Terre. I read that review on Trip Advisor, and I don't agree at all. Was there a crack in the cement on the balcony..I guess there could have been...most buildings in Europe are rather old and a crack would not surprise me. I'm sure it was safe. Couldn't you reserve a room by calling the hotel? The Mercure Marche au Fleur is also on the promenade, has gotten a good write up, if you are leery about the Primotel, it's another thought. When are you leaving for Nice? I never thought that I would like Nice, but I love going there!

allison...I"ll be in Nice June 17th-20th and off to the Cinque terre for 2 nights. We called the hotel suisse and have a room for those dates with a terrence and sea view. Im very excited! We still haven't choosen a place to stay in CT. We were going to just show up....but wondering if we go in June, maybe we will need to book one ahead of time. Thanks for your advice.

If you don't book hotels ahead, you can end up wasting precious time hunting around for something that has room--and usually having to take the least popular place.

paula5 - I stayed at the Primotel Suisse in November of '01 and had a room with a balcony overlooking the water. It was just fine, as a matter of fact a step up from my usual two-star hotels. I was able to walk everywhere from there including the train and bus stations as I had no car. I did daytrips very easily. Have a wonderful time,

If I were you, I would book something now for the Cinque Terre. It is becoming a very popular place. It's a busy time of year there and I have read that some people were having a hard time booking already. Sure, maybe someone may be hawking rooms when you get off the train, but why risk it? What were you planning on spending there?(if I may ask :) ) Any particular town?

We stayed at the Hotel Grimaldi and absolutely loved it. In fact I plan to go back and stay with them again this year. It's ideally located, it has an internet room and most of all the staff was so friendly and helpful we extended our time there before we drove to the italian riviera. We were in Europe for 6 weeks and stayed in a number of hotels but this one was the best. Enjoy your holiday.

thanks for all the advice. It has been very helpful. We were planning on staying in Vernazza-but pretty much open to suggestions. We are there for 2 nights and off to Venice.
