Nikki, leave it to you to discover "Les mounaques." Nice to see a local custom that lives on.

You do get around. I remember that you drove through way-off-the-beaten-track Bretoncelles, so clearly you like the back roads.

Gardyloo, clever captions. I like the way you include people in your photos, something I don’t do often enough except occasionally for my husband. I might take a long shot at a market, but even so I usually notice somebody giving me a hard look. Your subjects look completely natural.

I’m going to find a photo of my favorite garden in France, Le Bois des Moutiers. It’s an English style garden around an English style house, designed by the two outstanding collaborators of the Edwardian era, Gertrude Jekyll for the gardens and Edwin Lutyens for the house. I’m speaking in hushed tones here.

This is the entry arch and from here on, everything in the garden is lovely.

Isabel, who is that dear little crepe flipper?

isabel Mar 19th, 2020 04:58 PM

I have no idea but isn't she adorable. I took that quite a few years ago, so I've been looking at it for so long I feel like I know her.

This is perfect for "armchair travel". We should open similar threads about other countries.

Coquelicot Mar 21st, 2020 04:28 AM

KayF, your first and third photos just say "summer in France." Thank you.

quokka, go for it!

Have just started a thread for Germany. Come on people!

The first time I saw a chocolate aisle in a French supermarket I was flabbergasted. This is from a Carrefour. Our favorite mass-market chocolate is Cote d'Or. Okay, I admit it's Belgian but I think Belgian chocolate is richer and creamier than French.

Quokka, I wasn't familiar with Lauterbourg, so I looked at it on the map. It's really out there in the far northeast corner of France. It's been one of those political footballs. To look at the buildings you'd think you were in Germany.

quokka Mar 21st, 2020 03:45 PM

To me it looks rather French, certainly not German.

StCirq Mar 21st, 2020 03:54 PM

Hmmmm....doesn't look the least bit French to me. Very pristine and orderly and sculpted and Germanic.

Coquelicot Mar 22nd, 2020 04:54 AM

I think that Chateau-Gontier may have more flowers per capita than any other French town we've visited. This is part of a large garden down near the Mayenne river.

Beautiful Dinan and its half-timbered houses and the Rance river. Gardyloo, you captured the feeling of an early evening when the biggest decision is which excellent restaurant to go to.
