Photos of another Greek Island

Most posters on this board who are visiting the Greek Islands seem to go to the Cyclades or other Eastern isles, which I personally tend to think of as being rather barren and stark. I've put together a few of the hundreds of photos I've taken, between May 1992 and July this year, that may help to show why I so love the Ionians.

Great pics, I loved my daytrip to Paxos last year. I am the same way when I go away- a lot of cat pictures! I love it.

Thanks AP. Yes, I always adopt at least one cat for the duration of every holiday in Greece. We once had the same one 4 years running!

A lovely set of photographs indeed. They certainly show the character of Paxos and I wish I were there now.

I think the reason most people go the cyclades direction is the proximity of Athens airport and they are easy to reach and, yes, you are right most (but not all!) are very stark and barren. Also accomodation is easier to find.

Most accomodation in the Ionion islands is used up because of direct charter flights from the UK and elsewhere.

In the case of Paxos as you know specialist upmarket 'villa' package operators predominate, when I arrived in Gaios from Parga accomodation was in short supply (june).

It is quite difficult, well time consuming, to include on a back packing trip via the other Ionion islands. My route to Paxos was via Ithaka, Kefalonia, Levkada, Preveza and from Parga on the mainland and then to Corfu.

These are very beautiful and wooded islands and are well worth the effort of travelling around.

Thank you for sharing.

Now I have to add another destination to the list . . .

Old One, I'm sure you're right about the Cyclades being so much easier to get to from Athens. Certainly the lack of decent on-the-spot accommodation is very frustrating - even after 11 visits to the island we're still forced to book through agents to get the standard of place we want, in the location we want it. Even though we know many of the owners, they can't rent directly to us because they're contracted out to the agencies for the whole season. But with the lack of "passing trade" you can't really blame them for making sure they guarantee their income for the summer.

Still, we think it's worth the extra effort, planning and cost. Ian, if you ever make it, I hope you agree!

Lefkada is the only main Ionian island we haven't been to (yet!), but it's high on the list if we ever get bored with Paxos ;-)
