Photography inside London sites
 

Another post recently brought up the subject of photography not being allowed in churches and museums in London. (The rest of that post was pretty idiotic so I felt it was better to pose this seperately as it is a legitimate question). Anyway, I have read conflicting information as to where and when they allow photography. In France and Italy recently I was never stopped from photographing inside churches or museums (Louvre, D'Orsay,Notre Dame, St Peter's, etc). A few places had signs banning flash photos - for rather obvious reasons but most had no problem with shooting without flash or tripod. Is England different? I remember reading somewhere that they allow photography in Westminister Abbey only at a certain time (might of been Wednesday evenings). Does anyone know this for a fact, or what the policies are in any specific places in London. I'll be there this winter. Thanks.

The Wednesday evening photography at Westminster was discontinued a year or two ago.

We found a mixed bag. So no some yes, but we found a number of churchs in England which allowed photography if you paid a fee.

You used to be able to photograph inside St Pauls, but no more. The Wed evening opening at Westminster Abbey has also been discontinued. But in many churches non-flash photography is allowed. You can take photos in the British Museum and everywhere in the V&A except for the Raphael cartoons and the fine jewelery gallery.

The usual rule for museums is no flash and no tripod.<BR><BR>I was in 6 churches, including the one in the Tower of London, and photography was not permitted in any of them.<BR><BR> Keith

Thanks for the answers. So I guess England must have a thing against photographers. Keith,(or anyone) do they allow photography in other areas of the Tower of London? Also, do the churches make you leave your cameras or just have signs saying that you can't use them?

Photography was allowed in other areas of the Tower.<BR><BR>The churches just posted or had staff tell you that photography was not allowed. Some people were taking photos anyway.<BR><BR> Keith
