Photographic Museums/Galleries in Central Paris and Central London
I have an interest in photography and wouldn't mind visiting a gallery or two while in Paris or London. I recently discovered that Paris has the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation only to find it will be closed during August when I will be in Paris. I've thought about visiting the Center Pompidou and Musee d'Orsay, but are there other galleries that anyone could recommend in either city?

The V&A in London has a large collection of photographs; the Royal Institute of British Architects has a large collection of architectural photographs.
The problem is that these are never on permanent view, due to the fragility of works on paper and particularly of vintage photographs.
There is a photography exhibition from the UBS collection on at the Tate Modern.
This looks like a pretty comprehensive list of museums in Paris that have photograph collections
http://www.paris.org/Musees/mus.rubr...ography.e.html
But the same problem applies. The entire collection will never be on view, but there may be smaller exhibitions of selected photographs. You'll only find out when you get to Paris and buy (or obtain from the tourist office) a calendar of current cultural events.

Thanks. I will look into those two websites.
Eloise, yes I had the V&A on my list of museums to visit in general, not necessarily just for photography, but forgot to list it on this post as I have been concentrating on my Paris plans.

In Paris, there's the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie. There're also two locations to Jeu de Paume. One is the one by Concorde, as Travelnut said. Another is the Sully location.

Photographers' Gallery was on my London list for a previous trip, but I've not yet made it there:

If I recall, Orsay has an exhibition related to photography coming up. It's mostly on the early days of photography though based on what I recall reading.

Forgot to mention that Bibliotheque Nationale hosts photo shows frequently. This is the latest one:

There was one on Sebastiao Salgado not long ago (missed it).

I really like photography, also, and the Cartier-Bresson foundation is good, too bad it will be closed. I don't believe that museum listing on paris.org includes the Maison Europeen which would be the best alternative, I think. That is a good list of all museums that have some photographs, it appears. Most do, of course, except the Cluny and some of those. Sometimes they have special photography exhibits at one of the museums, but you have to read about them in Pariscope or somewhere. Last summer, I think they had a special one at the Musee de l'Armee, which I enjoyed.
This is the URL for Maison Europeen de la Photographie:

I love the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and always visit when I am there, they often have good photography exhibits as well as other things (I like their frequent multi-media approach). They are having a special exhibit of Les Seeberger photos from 1909-1939 during this summer that would fit your dates:
http://www.bnf.fr/pages/zNavigat/fra...e=cultpubl.htm
That particular exhibit isn't in their new building where I always go (in the 13th), but in their old property called site Richelieu in the 2nd arr. It is open 10-7 pm, except holidays. This is the address:
58 rue de Richelieu 75002
The Jeu de Paume museum does often have some. I've been there and really disliked the one I saw, but that's something you never know, of course, it depends on who they are showing. Unfortunately, it is a rather pricey ticket.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I will look into them.
amaclise, I visited the Portrait Gallery 5 years ago when in London. I did enjoy it, but given time constraints and so many new things to do I will likely give it a miss this time around.
