I own a Mobal phone too and take it along for emergencies. I mainly use an international calling card to check in with my kids. Two years ago in France, I was able to use it from our hotel room phones without an extra charge from the hotel. But you always have to ask first because I've heard some stories about exravagant add-on fees.
