Actually when I'm in London, I've found a whole bunch of Japanese restaurants which are reasonable (although we can auibble if they are authentic such as wagamama, satsuma, kulu kulu....)....don't particularly like Indian food....

You can't even find a decent Philly cheesesteak in New York Cityh and we're only 85 miles from Philadelphia!

As far as my dear friend flanneruk, why are the McDonald's in London all so crowded? Seem to do a banner business and most of the clientelle seem to be locals (no different than places such as Munich, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague)......oh wait, I know. They're all there for the free wifi!

"why are the McDonald's in London all so crowded? "

What's your point?

- that being crowded is unusual in London? Everywhere's crowded.
- that Americans think McD is a stunning example of their ethnic cuisine? Bollocks.

Oh ... how I miss the Philly Cheese Steak! So many of the above commenters are right, you won't find one like you're looking for anywhere here in the UK.

BUT... Borough Market has a damned good roast beef on a roll that is pretty darn close. You can get it with peppers and onions (no cheese though). It's hot and delicious and juicy. I like mine from the hole-in-the-wall right beneath the bridge.

We've blogged about it before, here:

There used to be "The Great Philly Cheese Steak Co." restaurant in Gatwick airport's north terminal back in the early nineties, 'round about the same time, there was an Arby's in Haymarket, Wendy's in Oxford St and Taco Bell in the Picadilly area and Earl's Court. TB's timing for fast-food TexMex was not the best as most Brits in the early 90's were wary of something vaguely new. Don't understand why TB never came back for a second go overhere. Instead we get lumbered with the worst US export, Subway (gross).

I am originally from Pennsylvania and have spent lots of time in Philadelphia. I have had Philly Cheese Steak at the so-called "Best" places for PCS. I have found it a uniformly disgusting mess of ersatz gooey cheese and grey overdone fat-dripping tough beef on a soggy roll. So why anyone would like to go anywhere in search of a Philly Cheese steak baffles me.

Try fish and chips in London.
