Petrol prices in Britain are prone to fluctuation on a regular basis. In the North East of England, prior to Iraq, prices were 77.7 pence per litre. Following the cessation of hostilities, the price has now fallen to 72.7 pence. Fuel is usually cheaper from Supermarket sites, however, regular petrol stations, although slightly more expensive, tend to put more additives in their fuel to improve economy and clean your engine.
Stephen1957: are you saying that supermarkets get their fuel from different distributors than the regular stations?
Most supermarkets do indeed use the same suppliers, however additives are put into the mix depending on their customers requirements. Petrol supplied direct to supermarket chains tend not to have the additives put in. You pays your money and takes your choice. I tend to mix and match between filling stations to balance economy with prolonging my engine's good health.

Petrol prices in England this past January were about $4.00 per gallon, of course a gallon is 5 American quarts. On the other hand, towns are a lot closer together so the distances traveled is a lot less than here in America.
If you figure 77.7 pence per litre, that would be 3.10 pounds for 4 litres, which is only slightly more than a gallon. Given the exchange rate of $1.61 to the pound, gas would cost approximately $5.00 per gallon.
That is approximate based on a U.S. Gallon. I believe the Imperial Gallon is a little more than the U.S. Gallon. |

Where in the UK could you find petrol sold by the gallon? It's only sold by the litre. 3.785 of them make one of those teensie American gallons. So at 77p, and $1.61 to the pound, a US gallon costs $4.66, unless my calculator's on the blink. |
