TDudette I stumbled across this lovely trip report as I was researching Perugia. It sounds delightful, lively, close to other interesting places. What I found of most interest is how you said it was a cross between Siena and Aix. Could you elaborate on that a bit? My husband and I (late 50s) were very close to selecting Aix to go next September to live like locals for the month. However, my daughter chose Italy (Florence and Siracusa, Sicily) to study abroad so we are thinking we should set up house someplace in Italy. I haven’t been able to find Aix in Italy... |

lrice, Cripes, I think I've already exhausted my suggestions for you. Pick one.I've already explained to you in detail why this place or that place would or would not be suitable. And so have many other people. Pick one. If you want a personal travel agent/consultant to guide you through this process, which isn't exactly rocket science, hire one.
And to answer the specific question, I don't think of Aix as a place of beauty and would never try to find a place in Italy that mimicked it, because IME there wouldn't be such a place. |

Irice, thanks for resurrecting TDudette’s lovely trip report. We spent a week in a rental near Todi in 2004 with a day trip to Perugia, and this brought back many good memories.

Like Siena with a cool pedestrian centre and hills; like Aix with its student vibe. StCirq, DH and I were well away from Cours Mirabeau (sp??) and loved it. Big square that was market by day, bar by night! Sigh.... |
Perugia is another place where I wouldn't want to stay a month without a car. It has a charming centro storico, surrounded by a fairly large modern city, which sprawls along all the highways leading in and out. Look at it on Google maps. Zoom in and you'll see the centro as a little tangle of streets in a big octopus of a city. One plus is the university, which gives it a young atmosphere.
I agree with St. Cirq: you've had lots of great suggestions in your other thread. Don Quixote said to Sancho Panzo, "There are no birds in last year's nests." Cherish your memories of Aix, and don't try to recreate it. |
FYI, I believe my Perugia bartender said there are 7 different colleges in Perugia!

In the US, Princeton University has residential colleges much like those in Italy. |

I just sent this TR to a friend who just returned from Rome, Florence, and Montepulciano. Upon rereading, I found that the link to photos no longer goes to the Perugia album; this is correct (hopefully!):
10+ years later, I wonder what happened to Rocky Bananas and the lovely kids we met at Dempsey's bar. |
