Personal Travel Website - Which are the Best?

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to create a website for our travels, something more than just uploading our pictures. I've done some research and see that there are a lot of choices. I'd be interested to hear from fodorites which sites you like. I can manage my way through computers, but I'm not real tech-y.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Ellen

Most Internet providers give you web space to make your own website in addition to e-mail addresses. Check if yours does - then you can set up your own site there. Or register a domain name with a hosting service and use that - it only costs a few dollars a year to do that. You will need some HTML skills or be able to use a program to help you set it up. There are plenty around.

My latest toy is VirtualTourist, which has a forum like this one plus the possibility to create your own travel pages, share tips and upload photos. It's quick and easy to handle. Con: design possibilities are limited.

I just purchase webspace from a hosting company and use wordpress blogging software to manage it. This does take some computer know-how to set up, but not necessarily much programming knowledge. And you gain a lot of flexibility.

If you are interested, I can highly recommend www.icdsoft.com. They aren't the cheapest, but support questions are usually answered (and answered well) in less than 5 minutes and the downtime I have seen in the 6 years I have been using them can be measured in minutes.

You might also consider something like TypePad, which provides hosted blogging solutions.

For pictures, I love flickr, which can be integrated into many blogs.

I should have added - when it comes to most 'free' hosting sites, I find that you get what you pay for, which isn't much. Blogger is alright, but I'm not enamored with it.

Hi ellen,

Buying a domain etc costs money.. wats the purpose for the website.. is it because of your interest in travel and you want to share those experiences?
Try blogger.com
start with this i would suggest... free, no money involved and in some time you will get clear about why and how you want your travel website... then switch to buying domain space most probs...
You can even earn money thru blogger,com... get adsense google into it.. get familiar with the basic blogger.. then move on to spending your cash on this...
