Perpignan ?

Is Perpignan a worthwile overnight rail stop point ? Any advice would be appreciated including well located (to rail) best hotel and restaurant for early get away next day. Thanks for any help you can provide to us.

We only stopped for lunch, wishing we had time to spend a night. The bridges are all flower bedecked. We stopped at one of the many cafe/bistro groupings on a main square.

Perpignan is certainly worth a day or two - no more unless you have transport to see some of the surounding area. The Hotel du Loge is right in town and has a nice room that looks out over a small place next to the Mairie. Not really near the station though. The station is 300-400 metres out of the town centre and I think you would want to be staying in the town centre to make the stopover worthwhile

If you're planning on going in the next week or so, I would suggest not stopping in Perpignan. There have been serious problems in the past two weeks between the local North African population and the Rom population requiring a large police presence in the city. Things are calming down, but the problems are still making the news here.

What time of year will you be there? We were there in late winter a couple years ago and didn't find it at all appealing. Two to three hours of walking around was more than enough for us.
