Period London Hotel?
I've been looking for a hotel in London that has a period feel about its guest rooms - Victorian, Edwardian, or even Deco. For some reason, I expected the famous names like Claridge's or the Dorchester to look very vintage, but they are quite modern - even Brown's is very modern! Suggestions? L'Hotel on Beaux Arts in Paris is my dream hotel, if that helps.
Thanks! |
maybe this?

Cadogan. I used to know the old General Manager there. If I remember correctly, it's where Oscar Wilde was arrested.

I was right, but do read the other history about this hotel. Had a very good lunch there also a few years back.

Egerton House Hotel is one I've drooled over & would love to stay in. Check it out if price is no object. Click on Gallery & the other links & see if it fits.

For Edwardian, head to the Goring. It was the first hotel in London to have a private bath for each room, and it still feels properly period.
We used to love Brown's, but haven't returned since the update. |
We just stayed at The Montague on the Gardens near the British Museum. Fabulous place, great service, very British ambience. Rooms are small but apparently the Bloomsbury rooms are larger. We definitely would return. www.montaguehotel.com

Carrybean, thanks for the memory. My sister and I had a drink in the little parlor of the Cadogan in 1994. We went there specifically because I had read about Oscar Wilde's arrest. There were framed newspaper articles from that period, along with those referring to Lilly Langtry having her apartment there.
We were the only people in the parlor and the gentleman who took our drink order kept peering around the curtian at us. We ended up laughing hysterically (trying to stifle it, of course), as we were sure he wondered why we had wandered in on this quiet week night. This was our first trip to London (heck, our first trip abroad). My sister has passed away, but tonight I smiled again at the memory. |
I stumbled upon this site while I was looking for a different hotel... perhaps it will be of use!

Melj, I was fascinated with all the woodwork. I haven't been there for about 5 years but it really had an atmosphere about it. Don't know if it's been refurbished too much but hope it hasn't been.

Hotel Russell, in Russell Square, huge but very Edwardian. I felt I had time-traveled when we stayed there.
|
PS...I see that they refer to it as Victorian....I also see that tho the public spaces remain in period that they have modernized the rooms since our stay in '98. I liked the old dark woodwork guest rooms with "Peter Pan" type windows better, but at least the grand public spaces are still true to the past.

OMG, Fraukie, the Hazlitt is the most BEAUTIFUL hotel I've ever seen! I will pawn some family members in order to stay there. Thanks for all your suggestions!
|
I haven't stayed there, but the Cadogan Hotel looks nice.
|
The home page of the Cadogan's website shows a very modern guest room. The OP was asking for period decor.
|
When I was looking for this very thing several years ago, Hazlitt's, The Rookery and the Goring all came up. :)
|
Sorry, I was thinking of The Claverley on Beaufort Gardens.
|
That's OK Carolyn - other posters had suggested the Cadogan & I wondered why.
|
Because, Carolyn I've never been in a guest room, only the public spaces. Didn't check the rooms. Sooo sorry.
