None of my maps go far enough east to include this cemetary. Are there more than one entrances to the cemetary? (I know of just the one by the pere lachaise metro). I was hoping to take a non-circular walk there, I'd be grateful for any advice.

I believe you can access the cementary from the following three metro stops:<BR><BR>The nearest m&egrave;tro stations to the cemetery are: <BR>- Gambetta, <BR>- P&egrave;re-Lachaise<BR>- Alexandre-Dumas. <BR><BR>The Cemetery is open between 7.30am and 6pm daily.<BR>

There's a great old book (might not still be available new though) called "Permanent Parisians" all about the cemetary and it's inhabitants. Great maps and lots of info on the graves of the famous and the not so famous as well.

I was just there 3 months ago and only two entrances were open (the one closest to the Pere Lachaise Metro stop) and halfway down the road, mid-section of the cemetery (with an "e" not an a); it is conceivable you could start at the entrance closest to the PL Metro stop, make a circular route, then head towards middle to exit. Allow about 4 hours or so to see the "major" graves highlighted on the map, however allow enough time get from sector to sector as everything is far apart and is a bit tedious to walk.

Your remark--none of my maps go far enough...is so true. I've been planning a trip to Paris for a group of us who have been there several times. So many of the maps take in only the central 8 arrondissements and a bit of the 16th--and there is so much to explore outside this central ring. In response to another question here someone reminded me of the Le Saint Amour 2 ave. Gambetta at Blvd. de Menilmontant at the Pere Lacahaise metro stop. I pass this little gem onto you. It is a true old fashioned neighborhood bar/cafe that serves Auvergne sausages and aligote, a potato, cheese, garlic concoction that can be lifted in long strings then returned to puddles of gooey comforting mush. So warming after a walk through a cold cemetary. Enjoy.

We entered the cemetary off of the Gambetta stop which is one past Pere Lachaise, walked the cemetary and exited at the Pere Lachaise stop.
