PENSIONES: Rome, Florence, Amalfi
 

I am hoping to travel to Rome, Florence and the Amalfi coast in April and May, 2007 and am seeking a clean and reasonable pensione in each of these areas. My situation is somewhat unique because I use a light-weight power chair outdoors and the "front stoop" of these older buildings can limit my options due to lack of accessability. So, if anyone can suggest a pensione with no front steps that has a room located on the first floor or in a building with an elevator, that would be just great. Thank you very much for whatever suggestions you can offer.

I have been trying to think of one in Amalfi and I can't come up with anything. Is there any publication that has this information?

The Hotel Genio in Rome doesn't have steps in front and it does have an elevator.

It is hugely expensive, but I know that Le Sireneuse in Positano has an elevator. I don't think there are steps at the entry. However, once inside Positano, I think you would find it extremely difficult to go anywhere other than your hotel because the town pathways are mainly steps. Ravello is a mostly flat town. You might do best there.

We stayed here last month. It's on the ground floor, no elevator required, and just may be wheelchair-accessible, I'm not sure. Contact them via email...they couldn't be nicer AND the place is absolutely wonderful AND it's very reasonable. Minutes from the Duomo, et al, yet very quiet & really lovely -- without a doubt one of our all-time favorite accommodations anywhere.

I'd suggest reading and posting at SlowTalk.com and SlowTrav.com . There is a poster there who uses a wheelchair and has written at least one article about managing Rome with disabilities.
