Someone mentioned this place once and now I can't find the thread.
Anyone with first hand experience?

Funny you should ask! We are at Pension Suzanne now! Arrived today, and will be here for 4 nights. This will be our 6th time here. That may be all you need to know, but please ask more specifically if you want detailed input.

You can often easily find old Fodor's threads by doing a google search containing relevant key words rather than using Fodor's search feature. A search string like "Pensione Suzanne Fodor's forums Europe Austria" will net you a lot of hits (including this thread you started) and you might find what you are looking for.

I stayed there a number of years ago. Liked it a lot--terrific location just off the Kärtnerstrasse.

Yes, and here is the review I posted on Tripadvisor:

Pension Suzanne could not possible be better located: amazingly easy to get to and in the thick of artistic landmarks. My room was very simple but quite clean. The furnishings were dated, but who cares - there was a safe, the wi-fi was strong, the heating worked great and the bed linens were very nice. The bathroom seems brand new and is squeaky clean, and the water was nice and hot. Michael, the owner, is the second generation to manage the place and he takes the job seriously; he really cares and it shows. At breakfast, for instance - which has a good selection including both hard-boiled and soft-boiled eggs - the service is welcoming and efficient and coffee is served with warm milk! A nice touch you don't often get even in 4- or 5-star properties.

The one real negative is the thin walls between rooms - you can hear your neighbor coughing, making phone calls or whatever. I had an interior room (facing the courtyard) and there was ZERO street noise, amazing considering the central location. So when the neighbor was quiet or sleeping my room was extremely quiet, which is very precious to me when I travel.

Now, this ain't the Ritz, so if glittering this and posh that are important to you this place probably isn't for you. But if an old-fashioned room, centrally located, priced very reasonably and run with professionalism and care appeals to you, then look no further.

Room Tip: Interior rooms have zero street noise.

We have been traveling to Europe in Sept. For many years now but Vienna is totally new for us. I'm just starting the research so I'm not familiar with anything yet. Just trying to find a new adventure. First thoughts are Vienna 4 nights, Salzburg 3 nights, Venice 4 nights. All new for us. Vienna is intriguing, the other places are still a work in progress & may change.

More specifically, I can echo danlev's comments above. We actually like the exterior-facing rooms because we like to see the street wake up in the morning, and like to hear the horse carriages go by. A real bonus is that when the opera is on, we can hear it from our room when we open the windows. We're not that noise sensitive, but this rooms seems extremely quiet.

The room we always get is #21. It's large (by most cosmopolitan city standards), the bathroom is spotless and works. Large closet and ample storage space. This matters to us as we are traveling for 2 months and have a bit more "stuff" than usual. We also do some work while traveling, and the wifi here is very fast. Michael has recommended some very good restaurants in the area. Huth is especially good.

As always, TripAdvisor is also a good source of multitudes of reviews and pictures of the hotel.

Stayed here - love the location in the centre of Vienna. Enjoyed having a kitchen even though it was tiny - close to Billa supermarket . We were in the back building - very quiet .

LisaG.......read your TR's. We've booked Pensionne Suzanne in Sept. For 5 nights.
First we'll be at our favorite apt. In Paris for 5 nights and then fly to Vienna.
We've been to Paris many times but Vienna will be new for us. We are looking forward to all Vienna has to offer.

What a find! We spent 5 nights & it was perfect. Close to the Opera House right in the city center, we could walk to many of the sites and stroll the pedestrian streets with many cafes & shops.

So many good restaurants to walk to at night including, right across the street, Opera Gasthaus was excellent and Cafe Schwarzenberg, a few blocks away, was one of our favorites.

Public transportation was at hand & quite easy to figure out to other sites.

The breakfast at the Suzanne was just what we needed, easy, good food & service, and just 10 Euro per person. Everyone in the office was knowledgeable and helpful in our daily planning.

Rm. 41 was large, very comfortable, had a small kitchen (which we never used except for ice & frig) and quiet. We would definitely stay here again.

I have quite a soft spot for Cafe Schwarzenberg. Happy memories of eating poppy seed cake and listening to live Viennese music on Sunday nights. I love the decor and like their goulasch too.

I generally stay at the Marriott that is near there. If I had the money, I have to admit I'd splash out at the Imperial. Even just having a slice of cake there is a small forture, but it is one of my favorite cakes in Vienna. Fudgy. Did you go into their lobby by any chance? The chandeliers are astonishing.

Frencharnoire-----we walked by The Imperial but didn't go in...another reason to return. At The Schw. We heard a piano played & violinist on one visit. Went there several times, sometimes just for coffee & dessert. Loved the torte with the fresh raspberries on top. The boiled beef with 2 sauces was delish (something that doesn't sound as good as it is.)

Tafelspitz (Austrian Boiled Beef) is indeed a tasty dish. Sounds like you enjoyed your first trip to Vienna.

It's pretty easy to find threads on that with the FOdors search tool --just put "suzanne AND vienna" in the box without quotes. The key to searching with best results is not to use a lot of unnecessary extraneous words that are commonly used in many posts, and to limit it to key words. Searching on words that may be spelled differently is also a way to lose info -- eg, searching on "penzione suzanne" when many would call it Pension Suzanne as that is its real name. The word Penzione is Italian, I believe, and would not be used in Austria.

AS for experience, I have a friend who stayed there and liked it a lot, that's all I can say. I stayed at a different pension near the VOlksoper which I quite liked, Pension Museum, in fact, great location near Spittelberg and right near a tram stop. I liked being a bit out of the center. It's an alternative, anyway.
