Pegnitz

My husband and I are planning a five day trip. Our main focus is a visit to the town of Pegnitz. I understand it's near to the Czech border and would like to stay in Prague, with a day trip to Pegnitz. Not sure how it is driving and whether we should check out the train instead. If anyone is actually familiar with the town of Pegnitz, I'd love to hear from you.

I haven't heard anyone mention Pegnitz in years, this is so random! I went to high school in France (and in Prague, actually), and our school had an exchange program with Pegnitz. I am sorry that I don't remember much that would be of help to you, but I remember it was a very pleasant town, and there were some nice pubs. There was one very old one, all wooden, that was very nice, but I couldn't tell you where it was. As I recall there is a river running through the town, very pretty. It is not far from CZ, but the roads in CZ are tiny, for the most part. It might be more convenient to take a train to Nuremberg, and then a train to Pegnitz (Nuremberg would be a nice one night stopover anyway). It is certainly drivable, though. I'm curious why you're heading to Pegnitz specifically--family there, or ancestors perhaps? PS--if you want info on Prague, I know it very well and would be happy to give you ideas on things tosee, places to eat, etc.

Pegnitz is about 5hrs by train from Prague (with 1 or 2 changes). Allow just over 3 hours to drive. Pretty long for a day trip.

Pegnitz is much closer to Nuremberg (40 minutes by train) than to Prague. If Pegnitz rather than Prague is your main focus, I would suggest staying in Nuremberg.

CharlieB is right- I would even think that three hours for driving is pretty optimistic- remember that you have to cross a border and when there is heavy traffic, you can easily spend at least half an hour waiting at customs.

In my opinion, Pegnitz is definitely not a day trip from Prague. You can easily drive it in one day, but do not figure in that you can do a return trip with some time to spare.

There is a pretty famous restaurant cum hotel in Pegnitz called Pflaums Posthotel Pegnitz. The hotel is considered ultra- modern, not what you would usually suspect in a small town like Pegnitz.
I have not stayed there (as I used to live in the area), but had dinner there once.
It was nice enough, but a couple sitting next to us found a worm in their soup (the same as I had already consumed). This sort of contributed to a lack of will to return on my behalf.

For accomodation you might consider Bayreuth, which is some 15 km away.

Enjoy your trip

I might as well add that in my opinion the best hotel choice (should you decide to stay in Bayreuth) would be the Bayerischer Hof right by the station - http://www.bayerischer-hof.de/HOTEL/ENGLISH/MAIN.htm

Pflaums Posthotel in Pegnitz can be checked at www.ppp.com

mp413 Thanks for the information. You were somewhat on target. In 1971 my brother was stationed with the Army in Stuttgart. On a training session his helicopter went down in or near the town of Pegnitz. The mayor of the town actually wrote to my parents and told them of a monument that was erected there. I have no idea if it even exists, but I thought 32 years was long enough to wait to find out. I'd love to hear from someone in Pegnitz to see if they know anything about the monument. From the other replies received, it does seem like Nuremburg would be the better destination.

Thanks for your help.

Too bad you won't be visiting Prague! Have a great trip though. I hope you are able to find the memorial in Pegnitz.

I checked out the Pflaums Hotel website, and the place looks awesome! I might have to take a trip to Bayreuth one day, and then check out that hotel.

@suz2275 If you are still following up, I have information on the monument at Pegnitz.
