Peak District and Surrounds: Suggestions Appreciated
Our upcoming August trip which stretches from Switzerland to Italy and Scotland and involves a four-night stay in Buxton thus far tentatively includes visits to Chatsworth (House) as well as Hardwick Hall.
Other than those two we have no specific plans. We will have a car. Yes, we like scenery and drives though such; any other memorable house/museum/church suggestions would be appreciated. Also any notable local events might be of interest. I have allowed other things to intervene with research for this segment (Cornwall and London follow) and am trying to catch up. Thank you in advance. |
Hardwick is beautiful & the history fascinating:

Thank you VERY much for this. Appreciated.

I'll second MmePerdu's recommendation of Haddon Hall. It's very close to Chatsworth, so you can easily see both in a day.

Lee Ann, thanks.
I've at least started making definite plans for the area and managed to get tickets for a theatrical performance in the Buxton opera house while we are there. I can hear it now when I write the trip report: "Why didn't you do this?" and "Why didn't you do that?" Perhaps I should write the report NOW. |
Haddon Hall was my favorite thing we did in the Peak District.
We also went to see two stone circles. One we found on a farm, and one we never found, but a lack of directions led us to a short and beautiful trail. We took a lot of rides to see villages and countryside. We stayed on a working farm which was a unique experience for us. |
Tuscan,
I already suspect that we are going to spend considerable time simply "driving around" and taking in the scenery. More than once when we were in the Cotswolds we ended up in somebody's front (sometimes rear) pasture and I'm certain they were peering out their windows wondering who the hell these people are! Fortunately we didn't knowingly do any damage. |
