Did you overnight in Stuttgart ? Would be interested in name of the accomodation. I'm

We stayed three nights in Stuttgart at the Intercontinental Hotel. We paid $138 a night (US) for the room with gigantic and amazing breakfast buffet every morning (think big hotel Sunday brunch buffet). It is right across the park from the train station and there is a subway station almost next door. We did a day trip to Baden-Baden. In town visited the Mercedes museum (great) and the Porche museum (a total joke). Also went to nearby Ludwigsburg and the palaces there. Loved the art museum in Stuttgart, and enjoyed visiting the various areas of town. Had plans to do a couple of other day trips, but spent more time in town than we expected to.

Partick, I just booked Swiss Cottage Cars because you recommend them so highly! We're going for Christmas and Nerw Year.

Barbara - enjoy - Stuttgart is "off the map" for many, but such a great town. Don't miss the Christmas Market. Be sure to take a photo at the Gazebo in front of the palace....I hope St. Nick is still playing his violin....if you have a chance take a quick trip to either Sindelfingen or Boeblingen, both have sweet old (restored) sections worth wandering around for a few hours.

Wow, Barbara. I guess they'll be competent to keep the reservation so long. I've never called more than a week before hand as they have lots of drivers. I might suggest you call and reconfirm the week before you go -- that is a long time for a reservation for a large and busy company (which it is).

Funny story about Swiss Cottage Cars. Although I swore I'd never do it, this past summer we decided to take the tube to Heathrow when leaving for Berlin because we are only about a block from Covent Garden tube (with elevator), we were on a rare economy kick, and it seemed so easy -- especially on a Saturday. That morning when we walked by to get coffee, I decided to go ahead and buy our tube tickets. The guard heard me talking about Heathrow and informed me there had been an accident and the line was closed. We'd have to change to a bus part way, then back on to the tube. I went back to our flat and called Swiss Cottage Cars and they came half an hour later, just as I requested.

Patrick, I think I posted this on the wrong thread. Thanks for responding. I will double check closer to the time. I was a bit anxious because it's such a busy travel time.

auntgrapes - it has ben to many years for me to feel comfortable making a recommendation. Watch the thread started by Dana, she make pick ups ome ideas from Gargamel and others that would be of use to you

Partick gave a lot of good infos about the town. The baroque castle in Ludwigsburg is very nice but in winter the garden is not a hit. As I told, dont count in the Interconti, it will be closed, not shure whether is is still open in December.
Small, cozy place - well, Boeblingen and Sindelfingen are not that great thing. It You like old houses/town to walk arround go to Esslingen (visit the ruine, marketplace and perhaps have dinner at the "Einhorn", charming cellarrestaurant). Or Plochingen, also nice old houses and one new, designed by Friedensreich Hunderwasser. Marbach is nice, the place Friedrich Schiller was born. A nice tour along the river Neckar, sorry, in winter there is no ship-traffic. Also in this direction there are two very nice villages: Bietigheim and Besigheim. All those places You can easyly reach by d-train in about 10 -20 minutes from Stuttgart center. Btw, take a day-ticket, it is very cheap and allows (I guess) up to four persons to use it 24 hours on every line arround.
