Path of the Gods / Amalfi coast

I am getting alot of confusing info on doing this hike.. I gather public transportation to the trail head is a bit complex and then at the end, there can be a long walk down to Positano. We are deciding whether to stay in Sorrento or Positano...or would somewhere else be better for doing this? We had planned on Sorrento as we also want to go to Capri, Pompeii and perhaps a driver / bus along the coast. Or option 2, do the other outings from Sorrento and then go to Capri for hiking. Advice please? We will be there near the end of May, early June.

How much time do you have? Can you split your days between Sorrento and Positano?

6 nights - yes we could split if doing the hike from Positano is not too complicated. We would have to get from Positano to the trailhead by public transportation? and then finish above Positano?

Since the Path of the Gods is nowhere near Sorrento, it would make sense to stay in Positano for at least part of the time. Ferry from Positano to Amalfi, then bus from Amalfi to Bomerano where the Path starts. The Path ends in Nocelle, which is in the hills above Positano. If you don't want to hike from Nocelle down to Positano, you can always catch the bus down to Pos.

You can also visit Capri via ferry from Positano.

Some people come up from midway, though it may be a steeper hike.

My recollection is that the latter half near Positano is more scenic. I did stay in Amalfi so I did take the bus from there up to the little town above.

We stayed in Positano in June of 2014, hiked the Path of the Gods and highly recommend both staying in Positano and doing the hike. To save time and hassle we took a taxi from our hotel to Bomerano where we began the hike. At the end of the hike we took a bus from Nocelle back to Positano. In the link to my report below, scroll down to day 13 for a description of our day and below that is a link to our pictures from the day. It was an incredible adventure with gorgeous views and like I said in my report, even though it was not a difficult hike, we were very proud to have done it.

Since you also want to visit Pompeii and Capri, I'd advise splitting your time 3 days in Sorrento, three in Positano so you can hike the Path of the Gods, and enjoy the town.

Try to get as early a start as possible for the hike since May/June can be quite hot, though not as broiling as July and August.

It is possible to visit Capri from Positano, but sometimes the boats get cancelled even on beautiful days because of rough water at the port.

Better to stay in Sorrento which has a deeper harbor and less chance of that happening. Also, Sorrento is very close to Pompeii. ( about 20 min. on the local train).

Just a FYI: I would book your hotels as soon as you have your itinerary sorted out. May/June are quite popular months on the AC.

The bus to Bomerano leaves from Amalfi so if your focus is to walk the Path of the Gods from early in the day, then you may be best staying Amalfi. You can catch a bus back to Amalfi from Positano any time later in the day, at your leisure. The walk from Nocelle to Montepertuso is pretty flat but steep down from there Positano (two options: stairs or road).
