Passport to reserve lodging ?
We are using a travel agent over the internet to book accomodations in Santorini for May. They are requiring that we fax them a copy of our passport in additon to the credit card info. Is this standard ?

I've never been asked to do this. I suppose the reason MAY BE so they know that the credit card really belongs to you...although I'm not sure that having a copy of the passport info page really proves that.
A more likely request would be for you to provide that special security code on the back (and the front of some) credit cards.

Is this an agent whom you have a past relationship or jsut an onlinbe booking service?
I would not send someone a copy of my passport merely to make a reservation.
If you are working with a TA, not just a clerk at a booking sevice, let them work it out.
Sometimes people ask for info, but they don't really require it. Your passport shold not be needed to make a reservation.

Two things:
Providing a passport copy in advance is unnecessary and makes me feel cautious and suspicious.
Also, unless you absolutely NEED to feel the security of an advance booking, May is not a busy month on Santorini and you can just arrive and very easily find a room for yourself, probably still at the hotel of your choice. So if you're up for it and you arrive with some daylight still left, you can take the airport bus or ferry port bus into Fira and then make your way to your village of choice and find a room once you arrive.
Which hotel are you thinking of booking through the travel agency you mentioned?

Are you booking through Fantasy Travel out of Athens? That's who we used and they required us to do that. I had been working with them for months by that time and did not feel uncomfortable with it. We had no problems - they were a great agency to work with - our trip was flawless.

Ditto... NEVER been asked for this.
Very used to being asked for passports on arrival in many European countries so that they can take your details in order to register you with local authorities (as per some law or other). But that's strictly been on arrival and nothing to do with reservations.
