Passport Renewal Time?

I inadvertently let my passport expire in Nov. and am in process of applying for a new one; seems easy enough since only few months have passed since expiration date. However, my trip to France is in June; "surely" enough time to get the new one processed without paying for expedited service?

Are you American? If so, that is plenty of time -- You'll probably have it by early April. (not quite sure why this is posted here - has nothing to do w/ Europe or France)

Because she's going to France?

I think it takes longer if your passport actually expired, but I will let you know how long mine takes. It hadn't expired yet, and I mailed it off for renewal a few weeks ago.

Sorry, Janis, but as a longtime user of this forum, I think passport questions have been posted and answered in the past. (Same as iPhone questions, which I am about to post--just ignore when you see it).
I am trying to find out if anyone recently had a long wait time for passports; I read recently that many people will be renewing this year b/c it has been 10 years since we Americans have been required to have passports for travel to Caribbean, Canada, etc. (Assuming it's ok to mention Caribbean and Canada on this Europe forum?

My wife mailed her request for a renewed passport recently and the entire process took about three weeks. BUT, hers had not expired and she did request that new ID card as well.

We also submitted requests for Global Entry and my wife received notice to come in for an interview immediately and I am still waiting. I am worried that they have read some of my postings here.

The normal renewal time is six weeks, but here is the government's notice on avoiding delays because of the expected requests for new US passports:

US passport renewals are indeed said to be slowed this year due to the surge of passports issued 10 years ago and are now coming up for renewal.

Allowing two months for processing should be sufficient time for renewal.

I renewed mine this past November just days before it was to expire, and received the new one exactly 2 weeks from the day I mailed it out. Have no idea what "that new ID card" referenced above is.

Perhaps you should famaliarize yourself with what an ID card is.

Not to beat a dead horse -- in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter . . . but >>I am trying to find out if anyone recently had a long wait time for passports; I read recently that many people will be renewing this year b/c it has been 10 years since we Americans <<

If you want to know if any Americans have had issues renewing/replacing American passports - wouldn't you want to ask in the States - not in France.

But I guess it is a difference w/o a distinction . . . I assume you'd have asked on the Asia forum if traveling to Japan and on the Australia/Pacific forum if traveling to OZ

Give it a rest, Janisj; you have wasted more of your time being snarky than you would have by just ignoring my incorrectly posted question.

Ah, yes, I do recall seeing that I.D. card thing before, but promptly dismissed it as irrelevant for my purposes because it states "Cannot be used for international travel by air."

Hi Sue

We renewed our non-expired US passport in December. It took about 15 or 16 days.

Bon chance!

We are going to England in the late spring.

Holly, I didn't get the card, either, for the same reason, but people who routinely drive to Mexico or Canada from the US like the option to carry something smaller in their wallets. It does cost extra...

janisj's hall monitor vest is cinched particularly tightly today.

LOL, NewbE!

Have a great trip to England, Deb; be sure to post a report when you come back. My 13 yr. old granddaughter and I are taking off on this quick trip to France early summer.

grandmere, I just realized I forgot to come back to tell you ours took a day or two longer than two weeks from the day we mailed them. Bon voyage!

Thanks, NewbE! Good to hear! I mailed my application, etc., on March 7, and they cashed my check on the 15 so I *assume* mine is in process now. At the post office they said it should take 6 weeks, but even that would work b/c my trip is not until mid-June.

Passport bureau responded quickly but mailed the passport, the application, and the ID card in three separate envelopes.

My wife got the ID card because some states are threatening not to accept driver's licensees. Some have already initiated the action, thus it was requested on the better safe than sorry theory and avoided the PITA of re-submitting an application.
