Passport Renewal Questions

My passport will expire in March 2002. We are *thinking* about planning a trip to France in May 2002. So my question is, may I go ahead and renew my passport now, even though it has not yet expired? I visited the State Department's website and downloaded the forms for a renewal by mail, but I saw nothing that addressed this issue.

I thought I read here once that your passport must be at least six months old before you can travel with it (???) or something to that effect. I'd also like to ensure that I have it in hand well before I need it, without cutting it too close before we're scheduled to leave.

Does anyone have any experience with this or information about it? Many thanks.

You not only can but you SHOULD renew it now. You are probably thinking about advice that your passport should not expire within 6 months of travel. You can travel with a brand new one.

Grasshopper & Howard are speaking the truth--but then again, IMO, they always do.

Bon Voyage,

I'll fill out those forms now and drop it in the mail! Thanks again for your help.
