PASSPORT number changed
 

I am buying an airticket now for June 2016. My passport would be renewed in Dec 2015 and the passport number would be changed

Would i have any problems as my e-ticket will be bearing the old passport number

Most airlines let you change/update details on line (passport number, contact info, etc.)

But you can renew your passport any time, no need to wait til it expires.

Personally, for decades, I've always traveled with both my current passport and my last expired passport in case the old passport number needs to be shown for whatever reason. I do the same with credit cards as I've had to have some replaced before traveling and then have been issued a new number and the old number might be on some of my travel bookings.

The passport number is not entered onto the eticket. The passport number is entered into a different field (advanced passenger info system) and can be done at a different time to making the reservation, for instance, when you do online check-in or any time before that. You normally get email reminders to do so and the eticket has long been issued. In any case, you can change these details anytime before travel, depending on the airline's website if it allows it.

As Odin says the passport number is for advanced passenger information, not the ticket. You can leave it blank for now and fill it in when you get your new passport.

It needs to be done before you can check in online.
I would set a reminder to do it for maybe 3 weeks before you are due to leave.
If you fill it in now you are likely to forget to amend it.

Airlines are extremely used to changing and updating "incorrect" information in passenger files. Many people are incapable of entering the correct passport number even when they have not changed passports (writing this with 35 years of airline employee experience behind me).

(Just look at the number of people here who ask questions about having the wrong name on their SNCF tickets -- and they have not changed name at any time in their life, for the most part. Airlines see this sort of thing all the time and spend lots of time fixing it, in case you are wondering why the check-in line is moving so slowly.)

Final verdict - It should not be a problem if passport number is changed, though.

But you should always carry your Old passports

I never carry an old passport - what for? If it has expired it has no purpose unless you have a visa in it which is marked "indefinite" as in the validity.

We were in a similar situation last year, and if I recall correctly the passport number was not needed for the ticket, but was information for the passenger locator file. We added the new passport information number when we received our new passports. Had no issues.

If your passport expires in Dec. now would be a good time to start the renewal process. It might take a month or so.
Better to be safe than sorry.

YOu don't need to input the passport info onto the airline website until you get it. They aren't going to do anything with it now.


The OP doesn't need the passport in December, not until next June, so I wouldn't worry about possible delays, actually, unless he/she may leave the country before then. Every time you renew it that far in advance, you have to renew it even further in advance the next time it expires. Mine took 6 weeks last time, it can easily take more than a month, though.

No asimm, you do NOT need to carry your old passport. No reason at all to do so.

Mine took 7 weeks, sent in on June 19th. I had it overnight end back to me. Obviously a busy time of year.

I had booked airline tickets in Janaury and put in my old passport #. I am flying next week; I just changed the passport #, no problem.

I won't be carrying old passport; I will carry a Xerox copy of new one as well as email a copy to myself. That is as paranoid as I get about passports.

While making an airline reservation , i have noted that in the details of the passenger you need to put passport details, but i guess it can easily be changed and that should not be a problem at all

They ask you for the passport number but you don't need to provide it at time of booking. (At least it has never been mandatory the MANY times I've flown overseas). You can leave that info completely blank. You will need to provide it eventually . . . And the airline will remind you/ask you for it later on.

Otherwise how could anyone say awaiting receipt of their first passport ever book tix in advance?

Don't worry about it.

Mine expired in Dec when I renewed in June. I thought the same thing about wasting 6 months. In reality it isn't a waste since your are not going overseas til June. It's faulty logic, just renew it well in advance to allow for processing time and make your plane reservation when you want either ignoring the passport # part or put in your current number. Don't overthink this....

I renewed my British passport last December even though it didn't expire until this September. They just added on the extra months, so my new one expires in September 2025.

I filled in the Advance Passenger Information for my flight to the UK when I checked in online, 36 hours before departure.

Of course with a new passport I will need a new ESTA, since there is no option to change the passport on that. I have no plans to visit the US for quite a while, sadly, so I shan't bother with it until I know I am going.

They don't add on the unexpired months here in US. Passport expiration month will be 10 years from month renewed, not the original month of expiration.
