Passport expires a few weeks after our return trip :/

We are travelling at the end of the year (almost five months from now) to Italy, into Milan, out of Rome....and my kids' (16 and 18) passports expire ten days after we return to the USA.

I wouldn't think that would be a problem, and yes, barring 'issues', we could renew them in time....but, the ever wise Rick Steven's says it could be an issue in some countries.

What do ya think?? Should I just go ahead and renew, or what...I called the passport office to see how long renewals are taking these days...or if they knew if Italy was an issue with that, but, well, you know...I got transferred around, and eventually disconnected.

In many countries, you must have a few months left on your passport for them to admit you. Check the US state dept website for details about specific countries.

I just checked the state dept website for you, and the passport must be valid for 90 days beyond entry. So, yes, you need to renew before you go.

Why in the world would you not renew them?

If there are issues, and there won't be, you'll have plenty of time to iron them out.

And if you do that, we won't have to listen to some tiresome rant about how your vacation was ruined because of some dumb international regulations (as opposed to dumb international travelers).

Yes, of course you need to renew them. You read the rules, now follow them.

I recently had a similar situation with my passport when we were getting ready for a cruise. The cruise company advised me that I would not be able to get on the ship with a passport that was going to expire soon after the trip ended. I don't understand why, but you better renew now.

Renewals right now are going pretty fast... Around a month.

Does anyone know why the expiration date on a passport isn't the one that countries go by? Just curious. Thanks.

I think that the requirement to have, say 90 days, is in case you are delayed in the country. They don't want visitors in county without a valid passport.

So, renewal now is a good idea.

It makes no sense to me that you would have trouble as your travels would be complete before the passports expire. However, for peace of mind and to be certain you are in compliance, I would renew.

KT - I agree it makes no sense but when has that had anything to do with bureaucracy? lots of countries require you to have at least 6 months left on your passport when you enter and some have weirder requirements, like South Africa which demands that you have 2 clear pages facing each other, or they won't let you in.

mmmooommm - you've got loads of time to renew - just do it!

The US has the same rule - it's not just European bureaucracy.

If your passport expires three days (or three weeks for that matter) after your scheduled departure . . . and you end up in the hospital (or in jail ) or are otherwise delayed you are SOL.

So the rule does make sense -- but not all countries have the same requirements.
