Passport/Custom Checks Between Old and New EU Countries

Have these been eliminated between the existing EU countries and the 10 new countries that joined the EU 1 May 04?

I believe you are confusing EU with the Schengen agreement.

Not all members of EU are part of the Schengen agreeement and not all participating ountries in the Schengen agreement are part of the EU.

There are no border controls between the countries that sign the Schehgen agreement. It has nothing to do with EU. The 15 countries are:

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries except Norway and Iceland are European Union members.

And finally, all the countries that signed the agrement reserved the right to suspend the free border crossings at any time without warning. I believe France is doing passport checks on their borders with Spain at the moment.

So, to answer your question, there are still passport and cutoms controls between many of the EU countries.

Last week I crossed the border (by train) between Czech Republic and Austria. My passport was checked by both Czech and Austrian customs officers
