passion play oberammergrau tickets for 1st of sept 2010
 

Am planning week trip to Germany half on business in Neuremberg. Was thinking of going to the Passion Play, noticed that tickets are held by tour operators, didnt want a packgage more than one night, in fact if single tickets were available would be perfect. Have been to Oberammergrau before and Bavaria but thought the Play would be great to see. Any ideas or suggestions. Anyone who has gone before, what did you think of it?

Having a place to stay is advisable this year because the play is presented in two parts, afternoon and evening. I don't think you'll want to travel anywhere after the play ends.

I was at the play in 2000 and enjoyed it so much that I will be going again in Oct.

You do not need any type of package, one-day or otherwise, if you go on a Saturday. Is that possible? We went in May (on a Sat.) driving into Oberammergau from Garmisch on our own - it went very smoothly. Also suggest you buy tickets immediately, you may already be SOL.

The play was "presented in two parts" back in 2000 when I first saw it. This year, the "parts" are at different times than they were ten years ago, i.e., the first part begins at noon or so and there is a dinner break for about three hours around 3PM. In 2000 the first part began earlier in the AM.

Whether or not you'd want to stay overnight is up to you...IF you can find a place to stay since most, if not all the hotels in town as well as many in Unterammergau and other places are given over to the whole affair.

This year we were told the tickets were not selling as well as in the past due to the economy, etc., but we certainly didn't get our first or even 2nd and third preferred date (we're on the usual two-night hotel package sold to individuals).

I wopuld say that if you are at all interested in this ongoing theatrical "phenomenon" which has been steeped in all sorts of controversies including the inevitable recurring charges of anti-semitism, etc., then I would highly recommend it. The production is VERY well done; the music is good, etc. Last time the crucifixion scene almost defied belief since it was extremely realistic; the Maundy ceremony and "Last Supper" scenes were particularly memorable.

Going to the Passionspiele official website is probably your best bet for getting individual tickets.

Looks like a 1-night package is your only option at this late juncture.
