Passau - Flood?
My boss is leaving for Passau (2 days) and a crusise down the Danube (7 days) on September 6. Anyone have any info on Passau and its condition? Has it been affected by the flooding? Thanks.

Yes, the part of Passau by the river was affected. We drove past Passau on the autobahn about 8 days ago and you could see evidence of the flooding and the river was still very high. <BR>BTilke (Brussels)

hi there,<BR>yes, the water still is very high. It could be that they stop the ships running from time to time for it is to dangerous. He should congtact the cruise agency. All other things run normal like they use to do after having 2 meters of water in the house. <BR>anyway, have fun<BR>Gar

I called the Passau Tourist Office on 8/26/02, inquiring about the condition of the altstadt.<BR><BR>I was told everything was fine and the flood waters had receded. When asked if there had been any damage to the alstadt, she responded "no ---everything is open."<BR><BR>I'm certain they do not want to lose any tourist dollars--so, the statement may have been somewhat swayed.<BR><BR>I say this, because I had been watching Passau's webcam, which is centered on the altstadt (adjacent to the Danube). For one whole week, the webcam showed water to the height of the top of the streetlights. (Maybe 1 to 1/2 stories high.)<BR><BR>The web cam now shows dry streets, but it is difficult to determine how much<BR>post-flood mud and clean-up work remains.<BR><BR>I would recomend his calling the hotel he will be staying at and verify that they are open. The hotel can also give him some less biased info about the area of any remaining flood damage.<BR><BR>I would also call the cruise line to ensure their regualar "itinerary" is on track. Some towns down stream from Passau were badly affected (Epps, Krems, etc.)

We were in Passau 2 summers ago when it was also flooded, but not nearly to these levels. While there we met some people who were on a Danube cruise. The schedules of the cruise ships were all screwed up because they could not get under the bridges on the rivers. They were having to moor in one spot and then bus people to various locations for day trips. That said we were able to take a day trip on one of the local ships into far western Austria. So I guess it depends on exact;y what kind of cruise your boss is planning on taking and where. I think I'd check it out thoroughly with the cruise company.
