pass the pasta in Rome
Vacation begins tomorrow in Rome; have two guidebooks and did lots of research on restaurants in Rome. Still wouldn't mind getting some tips on where others have had a fabulous meal. Leaving tomorrow evening so I am not writing this in a timely manner but hoping I may hear from a few folks who have to rave about a restaurant!

Pudgy, here are a few off the top of my head, all of which I have enjoyed at least once (and which I visited with or were highly recommended to me by numerous friends who have lived in Rome for 4-10 years each):
- near the Centro (Pantheon/Piazza Navona): Il Falchetto (just don't order the carbonara there, my friend (Roman resident) and I both did and we were disappointed compared to other places), Matricianella (I could go for some of their Jewish artichokes right now!), Al Duello, Osteria del Sostegno, Osteria del Pegno, Abruzzi, La Rosetta and Il Buco
- if you're near St. Peter's Square, there's Ristochicco on Borgo Pio
- if you want something a little more off the beaten path, and more quiet than the centro, Ristorante Scarpone is south of the Vatican and on the western edges of Trastevere. It's a quick cab ride and there's a quiet and rather large terrace dining area.
- if you're near the Ponte Sant' Angelo and your wallet is hurting, Il Pastaio di Roma and the one next door are quick 5 euro pasta places that are not all that bad. Sometimes it's nice having a break from the 12-30 euro meals (at least, I find it so)
- if you like family style dining, check out L'Orso 80, just north of Piazza Navona. There were 10 of us for my birthday and dinner was shockingly cheap (20 euro I think) for the amount of food we ate and the number of bottles of wine and water we consumed.
- if you like cheeses, go to Beppe e il suoi formaggi (south of Largo di Torre Argentina). They have antipasti and pasta and the like, but you can also get a plate of cheeses (5 or 12) and buy some from the counter to take back with you or take on a picnic along with other accoutrement
- if you're near the Baths of Caracalla there's Orazio (restaurants are not as prolific in that area as they are in other parts of the city).
The above range from inexpensive, moderately priced (10-15 euro if you're not getting a secondo piatto or anything other than the house wine) to distinctly pricier (again, depending on what you choose to order).
Enjoy your trip! And if you have a specific question about any of the above I'll be glad to say more - just didn't want to give an avalanche of info.

Our favorite in Rome was La Buca di Ripetta, on Vi Ripetta, Campo Marzio area.
Another we liked:
Cacio e Pepe (Via Giuseppe Avezzana, 11, 00195 Roma
And here is one recommended by a friend who lives near Rome.
Vinallegro (Piazza Giudutta Tavani Arquati 114) In Italy they have what they call Apperitivo Where yo u order a glass of wine, or any alcoholic drink (U sually between the hours of 69) and you have food bought to you or served buffet style all part of the price. (+5 Euros) Depending on the restaurant depends on the quality of the food. Som e just give you chips and peanuts but the one list ed above is amazing!

We enjoyed our dinners at Naumachia, near the Colosseum just off San Giovanni in Laterano; Caffe Bianco, on Via dei Baullari not far from Campo de' Fiori (plus we got dessert to go at Il Fornaio across the street); and Il Sorpasso, on Via Properzio close to the Vatican.
