Hi beatchick,
Well, your lineage is a long and proud one, and I certainly know what you mean about Wounded Knee being a haunted place-lots of voices there-especially walking along the creek. In fact it seemed overwhelming in some ways, from the viewpoint of an outsider.

It seems that while my ancestors were in the East fighting in the CIvil War, yours were giving their lives to protect their rightful hunting lands from Anglo invasion. I had actually never even seen a Buffalo until I was in the Badlands the day before I went to Wounded Knee!

And here we are today, trying to figure out how many European travel tips to reveal on Fodor's, It's a strange world, isn't it?.

kittrdg Oct 18th, 2004 05:38 AM

Hmmm depends on the crowd, group, indiviudal. I'm lucky enough to have many friends that like myself enjoy indulging their inner wanderlust, but I also have acquaitances who would never venture far from their own backyards. I think you just share with the people who are interested and hope you don't become a sensitive bore with those who don't share your passion.

Blacktie Oct 18th, 2004 07:49 AM

Why certainly you may brag about your trips, if you wish to be taken as a tedious fart. Or at the least, oh so boring. Oh, no, that same poster is once again blabbing about that trip to fill in some pedestrian name).

Haven't we all seen here that someone will post seeking travel advice, and posters, under the guise of assisting, actually use the opportunity to once again remind any and all just how well travelled they are.

Recycling never had it so good, LOL.

So, no, don't brag, just help other travellers. I take just fabulous trips, and you never hear me bragging. Just the other day, I went overnight to Columbus, but do you hear me touting that! You do not! I am however willing to advise potentials to Columbsus not to make my mistake.

cymbeline Oct 18th, 2004 08:23 AM

Excuse me for this petty stuff after Beatchick and Sog's more worthy discussion BUT Blacktie, you are the man. Oh how I appreciate you restraining yourself from bragging about your recent trip to Columbus.

I wouldn't want to say it, but you did:

< Haven't we all seen here that someone will post seeking travel advice, and posters, under the guise of assisting, actually use the opportunity to once again remind any and all just how well travelled they are. >

Forgive me for being mean spirited but perhaps Blacktie's point should be an example to us all...hee,hee.

Blacktie Oct 18th, 2004 09:04 AM

Oh, I didn't mean it, I didn't ... I'm simply dying to tell someone about Columbus!!! I'm about to burst!! It is so cruel, I cannot impart about my wonderful self in that wonderful city ... because nobody ever asks about Columbus ... it's unfair, but apparently nobody goes there.

OK, no Columbus, it's a bitter pill, but hey, I can take it. What about Home Depot, sure, a short trip, and local, but I did stop for a bite on the way back. Ask me, do, you'll never know how fascinatingly I travelled!

The heart lines are open! We've baited our breath and you have our undivided attention. Home Depot ... ready to travel when you are!

suze Oct 18th, 2004 09:13 AM

Never thought about it in those terms. I travel for my own pleasure. Because all my friends and family are travel fiends as well, the question of how we finance or why we want to do it would never arise.

I am happy to share what I have found in my travels and eagerly jump in when someone I know personally or a poster on a couple of BB's including this one has specific questions about a locale I am familiar with. But that's not bragging, that's simply sharing the wealth, doing a good deed, keeping your karma right (IMO).

Nikki Oct 18th, 2004 09:35 AM

I love talking about my travels. It helps me relive the trip, and it helps me share my enthusiasm. I suppose some people might see that as bragging, but it isn't the intention. This is why I love the internet. Whatever it is that you're interested in, somebody else out there wants to talk about it. Lots of somebodies.

And here on Fodor's are the people who love to talk about their trips. People who will never be bored, who will never wish I'd start talking about something else, people who will engage in conversation. Of course there are other people here too, and apparently Blacktie actually does get bored by this discussion. Oh well, there are those who want to keep it going, and as long as there are, it's a terrific way to do that kind of sharing that makes our traveling even better.

Blacktie Oct 18th, 2004 09:42 AM

Oh, no, you misinterpret ... I don't tire of hearing about someone's trips, never. If it's a journal report, and then responsive information in response to a request for advice. Oh, very legitimate. But I do grow uneasy when I see the same person, over and over again, taking a rather mundane trip of years and years ago, and expanding it to be an end-all, be-all gambut to offer "worldly" views on anything under creation. You just know the person talks a good game, but the dog won't hunt. They know who they are! LOL, they do.

cymbeline Oct 18th, 2004 09:44 AM

Aw, Nikki, he and I were just jesting. All of us love travel & Fodor's travel talk tips.

Blacktie Oct 18th, 2004 10:16 AM

ah, cymbeline, you are the bestest! Have a good day, I'm off to (insert pedestrian place you're read about and sworn never to visit).

Beatchick Oct 18th, 2004 12:00 PM

Blacktie, you mean Columbus, Ohio? I've been there and it's got a pretty skyline (I do love skylines). You can't talk about Columbus on the US board?

<i>&quot; This is why I love the internet. Whatever it is that you're interested in, somebody else out there wants to talk about it. Lots of somebodies.

Nikki, I second those sentiments!

Sognatrice, thank you for your interest. Regarding your comment about Wounded Knee Creek. Yes, that place is especially sad considering many died along the way trying to crawl, wounded in the snow, to Pine Ridge 20 miles away. And somewhere along that creek Crazy Horse is buried but probably in the Nebraska area.

Cymbeline, I didn't mean to hijack your thread with the discussion about Wounded Knee. It's a subject dear to my heart and something I rarely get to discuss. Even my children's eyes glaze over when I discuss their heritage.

Dex Oct 18th, 2004 12:06 PM

It's all in the context. If it's a travel site, it's not bragging - it's passing on what you know and have heard. If it's sitting around in the cafeteria at work with a bunch of people who never travel and could care less, it's bragging.

Blacktie Oct 18th, 2004 12:44 PM

Unfortunately the US board banned all talk of Columbus, so I'm stuck with Europe or Far East. True, it has buildings, but skyline? perhaps that's a more recent phenomenon.

Discussing travel is great. The issue comes from people who rarely travel, but are always the FIRST to post on any conceivable issue ... we all know who these few are. Thet are on that keyboard morning, noon and night. And rarely do they travel. But they talk travel untilthe cows come home, and is that ... I'll leave it to you.

I am fini with this issue. I have to go to Columbus, lol. If Kerry carries it, I'll give the city a second look. How's that!

Scarlett Oct 18th, 2004 01:48 PM

Awww, isn't that great? Blacktie shows so much interest in whatever any of us have to say, that he actually keeps track of who posts what about where and how often! Geez, if only I had a job like his, we would definitely be traveling more!
And then talking about it more which sounds like some people around here, who frequent a TRAVEL site, have a problem with people talking about Travel!
Personally, I have a problem with people bringing their politics into Travel discussions..
But then that is just me :)
Beatchick,
My grandfather was half Blackfoot :D..sad to say, he was my step-grandfather so I cannot claim to be so cool as to be part Blackfoot too..but it is (in my humble opinion) a great thing to be able to trace those bloodlines and see who came before you .. You must be so proud~
so
BACK TO TRAVEL....
my baby boy has purchased a ticket to....Bangkok, India, Paris and then on to NY to visit his mama and daddy.
How cool would it be if we manage to get to Paris to meet up with him there ?? I am working on it!! LOL
((F))
Scarlett ..who likes to talk about travel no matter where it takes me

SeaUrchin Oct 18th, 2004 01:55 PM

Scarlett, I think he was referring to me. I can't seem to think of anything clever and funny for reply, I can't think of anything travel related to relate either. So what am I doing here today?

Scarlett Oct 18th, 2004 02:00 PM

SeaUrchin, honey, Who knows who he is referring to and to tell the truth, who cares?
No one should come onto a Travel Site and sneer at people who post about traveling , no matter where they are going! What a snob!

Keep posting!!!

Suzanne_Valadon Oct 18th, 2004 02:27 PM

Sigh...speaking of tedious old farts.....

SeaUrchin, I doubt he's talking about you, sweetheart. Didn't you just go to Italy not too long ago? If he is then he's gotten his wires crossed.

I say whatever travel experience you have, bring it to the board. At least you can provide more than just one travel perspective: that of the snobbish, pompous, knowitall, beentheredonethat poster.

Blacktie, I don't think Fodors bans talk of a place. But they CAN &amp; DO ban people who post regarding it. Is this what happened, mon cher?? Well, you can always dust off another personality and start posting again.

So Leo... errr I mean Blacktie, has your employer rescinded the ban against you posting from work? If so, then at least one ban's been lifted from you. That would explain how you're able to post as much as YOU do during the day. And, my dear, have you been back overseas since you left your Marmottan book in a little caf&eacute; in the 16th some 3-odd years ago??

Scarlett, I guess &quot;Blacktie&quot; is not the only person who pays attention. ;)

LoveItaly Oct 18th, 2004 02:57 PM

Ladies, think Blacktie forgot to take his meds today, bless his little heart. ;;)

Beatchick Oct 18th, 2004 06:42 PM

I've heard, LoveItaly, that when people are in their manic phase that they don't like to take their meds.

Scarlett Oct 18th, 2004 07:08 PM

Speaking of Manic,
I cannot imagine how crazy I would get if I were planning a multi country trip, such as the one someone I know is taking, Thailand, India, Paris and the US. The guide books, the questions!! OMG! It would be so much fun planning and yet, it seems overwhelming.
And where else can one go with all those needs, but Fodors Travel Talk?
