Parking Outside of Rome?

In one week, we'll be making our first visit to Italy. Thanks in large part to the posts on this Forum, we have a good plan for most of our trip. However there is one thing we need help with: We want to travel to Rome from our timeshare in Soriano nel Cimino (near Viterbo) on two different days. Since it is so difficult to decipher the Trenitalia timetable, we are wondering about the relative ease of driving our rental car to the outskirts of Rome and taking the Metro into city center. We do not want to drive if it means having to negotiate Rome traffic, but if we can get to the outermost Metro station without much difficulty, it would be nice to have the freedom to travel to and from our timeshare on our own schedule. We would appreciate any suggestions or other enlightenment from experienced Fodorites.

I am topping this for you but with some advice:

Tell us what it is about the Trenitalia timetable you are having difficulty with.

I understand your need for "freedom" of hopping into the car and taking off for a parking lot but let's make sure that is really necessary first.

I'm not sure if you want to park in Rome or near Viterbo. Go to www.mappy.com and under map (not directions) enter your city. To the right of that click on car parks and then OK. For Rome it lists 30 and you will be able to click on them to get rates. They will be mapped by number so you can choose the one most convenient to you.

I live nearby in Vetralla: www.elegantetruria.com .
Perhaps we will meet when you are here.
From Soriano you can grab the train in Viterbo and/or Orte to get to Rome for the day.
