Parking in Siena
 

Does anyone have a link to informaiton or maps on parking for day trips to Siena by car?
My brother and his wife are staying 3 days at a country B & B near Monteriggioni and will have a rental car (7 km north of Siena) and want to include a day trip to Siena (they didn't want to do this by bus from Florence)...I've warned them to find parking outside the Siena city walls, but are there some lots on the north side with shuttle buses into the center of town? Is there special signage to look for?

They can -- to my perhaps imperfect knowledge -- only park outside the walls.

Parking (parcheggio) is generally well marked throughout Italy.

I do not know about shuttles, but the lot where we parked was a brief walk from the church where St Catherine's head is displayed and thus not far from the central piazza.

In most of the desirable towns, earlier is better. Tuscany is not the place to sleep in.

If you look on www.discovertuscany.com there is a map with the carparks surrounding Siena. Generally, you park and then take either stairs or escalators up into town, no buses necessary.

We rented an apt right outside the city walls. Parked at a large bus stop and took the bus in. Much less hassle than trying to find a spot at the city walls. jk

As on tarquin's link, there are quite a few, but they do tend to be quite expensive at €1.50 an hour (last time I was there). There is usually quite a bit of parking around the castle (except on market day). If you are lucky, you may find some roadside parking on the approach to the Santa Caterina parking lot.

One thing to note, once you approach the city itself be VERY careful of signage. It is far too easy to stray into a controlled zone (ZTL) and the fines are quite large.
