Parking in Siena

Good Day Fodorites,

I will be making a day trip to Siena from Montisi by car in May. The route will bring us to the south side of Siena on SR2. I am interested in detailed infromation about where to park both free public parking and any pay for parking lots that offer secure ( as possible) parking with easy walking or bus/tram access into the city.

Thanks as always for the good advise.

We parked in a public lot inside the city walls and about 10 minutes away from the center. We had no problems but I think the secret to our success was early arrival. I think we used Rick Steves as our guide on the parking situation but I no longer have the book. the resources above may help.

Enter via the Porta Tufa and there is a large parking garage near there---:10 walk to Il Campo.

We used the large gargage mentioned by bob--I believe it's on the south side but this was a few years ago. There's a walking path from the garage directly into the old town. If you leave items in the car, put them in the trunk and back the car into a parking slot, leaving no room between the wall and the trunk. We were there in Sept. and arrived around 9:30 am.

We also went on a weekday in May and found free street parking just a couple blocks outside the walls. We were not concerned about "security", as there was nothing in the car and we were returning to the car during daylight hours. Our main concern was finding our car again! :)
