Parking in Siena....

I can't seem to find a thread talking in detail about the parking in Siena. We will be leaving San Gim to Siena and then drive up through Chianti region before dropping our car at the Florence airport. Plans are getting fine tuned at this point with some changes and I have a thought that I read something about the difficulty vs. great tips on parking in Siena. Any suggestions for this day in early October is appreciated.

You'll have no problem. Coming from San Gimigliano, you'll readily see the large "P" signs for parking outside the walls. There's no parking that I know of within Siena itself...

ljc4creb,
See http://www.turismoverde.com/italia/i...pe/mappark.jpg

Do not try to park near the fortezza or the football pitch on a wednesday.

Don't even try to drive inside the city walls (as we accidentally did) as only city residents are allowed to do that, I believe. At least, that's what the policeman told us when he flagged us down!!

Anyway, there are numerous carparks located around the edges of the city walls, and it's an easy walk from there to the centre. They do fill up quickly though, so arm yourself with a good map showing all the car park locations, and be prepared to drive around a bit until you find a spot!

Other posters have given you good advice. Like hanl, we made the mistake of driving into Siena and it was frankly a bit scary. Our hotel did not give us good advice on which porta to enter and we entered on the opposite side from the hotel. We quickly dropped the luggage and parked outside the walls in a designated carpark. NEVER drive into Siena! It is very pedestrian.
