But there are two problems. Firstly, you have to find the entrance of the garage, which is not easy but doable with the help of a good map. And secondly, it is very expensive. You can expect to pay as much as ATS 160 ( US$ 12 ) for one day. There is one way to cut down the parking cost: Some shops in the old town will mark your parking ticket if you buy something from them. Then you have to pay only about ATS 70 ( US$ 5 ) for up to 8 hours.

A good alternative would be the use of public transport. AFAIK there is a direct bus between Groedig and Salzburg that operates at least hourly. Ask for a day ticket !

If the weather is fine, you should go to the Untersberg by the cable car ( very close to Groedig ). It is not cheap, but the view of the alps is worth it. Please keep in mind that the temperature difference between the Untersberg and Groedig can be as high as 10-150C !

Hope that helps.

Regards, Jochen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Doug ( [email protected])
Date: 08/20/1999, 05:07 pm
Message: I'll second everything Jochen said. It's very difficult finding one's way around Salzburg. Try following the signs to the Casino to get to the underground lot. The problem is that once you start following those signs, they suddenly disappear. I've been to Salzburg maybe 10 times and get lost at least once each trip. And I usually have a very got grasp of the local geography. Once you park in the lot you're in great shape because all the tourist sights are nearby. When you're ready to leave, stick the parking card you got on the way in into the machine just before you enter the area where your car is parked. The first time we parked there we walked straight to our car and then couldn't get out of the lot because we hadn't paid at the machine where the card is validated to let you out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
