Parking in Kohl.

We would like to drop in to Kohl very quickly to see the Cathedral. We will be touring Burg Eltz that morning and are staying at Schonberg that night. Is there a quick route, with accessable parking to take you to the cathedral? OR are we better to drive to Koblenz, leave the car and take the train? ANy suggestions..

I don't believe there is any such town as "Kohl" in Germany - do you mean "Köln", the English version of "Cologne"? If so, I suppose you could take the train in since the main station is only a few steps from the cathedral. However, the train ride from Koblenz to Köln isn't nearly as scenic as the ride south of Koblenz, and instead of driving into Koblenz, a large and fairly confusing city to drive in, it might be wiser to drive the Autobahn north to the smaller town of Brühl, just 12 km south of Cologne, and take the train in from there; trains run every half hour or so, and this would save you quite a bit of train fare over driving into Koblenz. It's about 15 minutes into Cologne from Brühl.

I've never driven into Cologne proper, but it occurs to me that if you decide to do so, you probably won't get terribly lost. The cathedral is so huge you can see it from miles and miles away.
Russ
Thank-you for that information. I did mean Koln. I'll be sure tocheck the web site. Thanks.

If you do want to drive to Cologne cathedral, you may find parking spaces easier to find on the opposite side of the Rhine in Köln-Deutz and walk across Hohenzollern bridge directly to the Dom, or try several park and ride (P+R) schemes operating on the outskirts. If you want to get close to the cathedral, try arriving during lunch hours (12 to 2) when traffic drops and parking is relatively easier.

There is a parking garage just east? of the train station we have always found spaces there. It is only about a block or two walk to the Cathedral. Driving in Koln is not bad at all.
Gary

Thanks again for the advise. Any idea how long it would take to drive from Mosel/Burg Eltz to Koln? I'm wandering if we are pushing it trying to do both the same day, and then get down to Schonberg in time for dinner.

From Burg Eltz, follow along the Mosel to Dieblich (maybe 30 minutes), then join Autobahn A61 north to Köln (105 km, about an hour) then drive into city centre. So a minimum of 2 hours? There's a limit, if I recall, of 130 km/h along most stretches of A61, but it's a scenic drive along the Eifel, with a view of Maria Laach abbey just north of Koblenz.
