Parking in Bayeux
 

We'll be staying in Bayeux at the Grand Hotel du Luxembourg for 4 nights and they charge for parking. Are there any free parking areas in the town?

Have you looked for it on google or a parking app? Those options are best.

sure, if you manage to find a spot on the street, but that is a very central location in a place with a lot of tourists, so I wouldn't count on finding a free spot on the street. Public parking lots are not free.

They don't charge very much, you might find it convenient to have secure parking right at the hotel.

How much does the hotel charge for parking -is it onsite and secure?

Free lot by Churchill Hotel but watch for market days. We had to but a disque bleu in our car. Our B&B gave to us. I do think many are paid lots. Parking is tight.

Yes - there are paid lots -- but how much does the hotel charge? Unless they charge a king's ransom, why pay to park somewhere else when you can park at the hotel?

The hotel web site indicates it is self-parking. Guessing that means a parking lot somewhere in the vicinity, not on-site secure parking. Am I correct? Looking at google maps street view, I don't see anything close except for street parking.

Hoping someone who has been there can give me more information.

floridacouple, we stayed at this hotel in 2006. I have no knowledge of what may have changed, but I can let you know what the situation was at that time.

The hotel was a Best Western property then (not sure if that's still the case,) and it shared a small parking lot with its sister hotel, the Brunville. The lot was more or less behind the Luxembourg, and, as one would imagine, space was limited. We always breathed a sigh of relief on returning in the evening to find a little wedge of space for our rental.

I don't remember a separate charge for parking back then, but It makes sense that there would be one. Can't imagine it would be too exorbitant for a hotel guest ?

Btw, we had a spacious room and loved our stay there. Enjoy !

PS I'm in FL as well, not loving all this liquid sunshine !

Why not phone the hotel and <i>ask</i>? IME 'self parking' generally means a lot at the hotel but they just don't use a valet/parking attendant.

Per lifes2short's post it does seem to be a lot under the control of the hotel.

To me self parking means there is no valet parking the car for gou. Park at gour hotel.

Take a look at a satellite view and call the hotel while you have that in front of you. There appear to be 2 parking lots that might be available, a small one adjacent to the hotel and a larger one that appears to be a paid city lot. They should be able to explain your parking options. If you choose a municipal lot make sure overnight parking is allowed.

One reason we chose the Hotel Churchill was the easy parking but we were not there on market day.

LOL at lifes2short! We were thrilled to have 6" over the past 3 days. Desperately needed the rain.

I cannot imagine a small French hotel having valet parking. If you are lucky, they have their own parking area near the hotel, but sometimes you have to park in the street or a public parking area.

The same is generally true of larger hotels.

We spent a weekend in Bayeux just a few weeks ago. To our surprise we found FREE parking right in the town centre at Parking Place aux Pommes. There were ticket machines here (no barrier), but a notice covering the machines explained (in French) that parking was free courtesy of the town council. This was confirmed by some locals we spoke to. No problem finding a space either day or night. I can't say if this is a permanent feature, but it was much appreciated.

There is also free parking on the outskirts of town but still walking distance into town. We parked here for the day when we did one of the WWII tours. The lots in town were pay using a ticket machine. This was last October.

Besides the parking lot at Place aux Pommes, about 250 meters from the hotel, and there is a lot at Place Saint Patrice, about 750 meters from the hotel in the opposite direction. We stayed at the Hotel d'Argouges which faces Place Saint Patrice, and it is definitely within walking distance of the cathedral, tapestry, etc. Both lots are clearly visible in satellite view at maps.google.com.
