parking in Bamberg
 

Well Fodorites, I listened to all of you who praised Bamberg. I finally bit the bullet and scheduled 3 nights in Bamberg next September. The only other time I tried to go there
(a few summers ago with no hotel reservation) I was literally laughed out of town at the 4 hotels which I tried. This time I made reservations at the Altstadthotel Molitor located at Obere Muhlbrucke 2-4 in Bamberg 96049. I would appreciate comments on this hotel from anyone who has ever stayed there. It appears to be on the west bank of the Regnitz River maybe 6-8 blocks southeast of the Domplatz. Can anyone describe the parking options (locations and cost) in this neighborhood? Also, we have difficulty carrying bags up more than 1 flight of stairs.

The Molitor has their own small parking garage and stalls are available upon reservation. If you can't arrange one with them, I am sure they could tell you about all the other options.

Never stayed there, but almost. Nice location and only 550m from Schlenkerla

I've been to Bamberg once (drove on a day trip from Nurnberg). We were there on a weekend and there was some sort of beer or drinking fest going on.

We parked in one of the local municipal lots which had the typical machine which accepted coins and I believe notes; you get the print out with the time on it and put it on the dash..the usual drill.

The town is obviously popular and if it were me I would DEFINITELY go with the hotel's arrangements (we did the same thing with our "old town" hotel in Nurnberg which had its own nearby garage because parking there is "impossible"...just be willing to pay for the lack of worry which is IMO worth it.

Meant to add that when we LEFT that town lot there was a LINE of cars waiting for spaces to open up...a LONG line.

I just looked up your hotel - parking is available at your hotel for a fee, but one guest comments that it is difficult with a big car. They give as an inexpensive alternative the parking station nearby.

The photos on the hotel website show cars parked above each other using those special ramps (I have only ever seen this in Germany, not sure how to describe them), so that is possibly the difficulty:

You need to contact them if you can not handle steps and let them know. I do not remember an elevator.

We liked the hotel. It is in a dead end neighborhood with narrow streets. The hotel might give you best directions to drive in. The first four pictures below are in the neighborhood. The Klosterbräu (a decent beer hall restaurant)is right across the alley.

Gary, love your pics! What month were you there?
We were there last May and enjoyed great weather. No car, used the train. Stayed in a Ferienwohnung, so can't comment on the hotels either! Loved the town though!( Have a TR here on Fodors)

I don't know that hotel, but the location is great. We had a car in Bamberg as well, so we picked a hotel that had parking available. There are city lots available - I remember one by the tourist office, which is not far from your hotel. We had a difficult time getting to our hotel (figuring out which streets were for driving and which were not), and I remember commenting that we should have just gone for the lot and the tourist office and walked :)

Mokka4, we were there in December 2008 for the Christmas Markets. We travel by train as well. We caught a taxi from the train station as my wife had a migraine. I remember that the taxi driver had to take a devious route to get to the hotel.

Travelforbeer. It might be best to park in a big lot, and walk or taxi to the hotel.

I am sure if you are driving with a GPS you would be able to get there OK.

Don't be so sure :) GPS told us to drive on some pedestrian-only streets.

Aramis and Dukey1- per your suggestions, I reserved one of the hotel's parking stalls.

Lavandula- Thanks for providing the hotel's parking photo. The stalls look strange but I am going to try it. Also, I found a way to get to the hotel from the south that doesn't involve driving through the city.

Gary- Per your suggestion I contacted the hotel and they assured me that the elevator will carry 2 people and it goes all of the way to the top floor.

Mokka4- I re-read your Bamberg trip report. It will be very helpful.

November_moon and Lavandula- Thanks for the information about public parking. I located the public garage on a map and will use it as a backup in case the hotel stall doesn't work out.
