Someone asked this today at TripAdvisor

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic...si_Umbria.html

This link was provided by someone who lives there (according to the poster's location info):

This is from the same thread:

Why didn't you just ask for clarification? I went to Assisi in January (took bus from train station) and the parking situation seemed pretty easy. The busses pick up and drop of in them, so I did see them. I think if you ask for clarification at TA (provided nobody gives you info here), they will help you.

We parked here. Large lot, easy access, cafe, and bathroom if you need one before leaving.

Just don't plan to park nearby if you go on an Italian holiday. Assisi is a favorite for Italians.

There are a lot of parking lots.

We have always driven up the road quite a ways and have never had a problem. Once you park, you walk down into the old square. Our visits there have been in July and August. Perhaps a bit of luck!!?? Richard

Ron, I usually park at the Mojano lot (no idea where that name came from!) I find it's easy to get in and out of and convenient once you're parked and on foot. You leave the parkade near Santa Chiara, so you're quite high up in the town and a fair distance from the Basilica of San Francesco. However, you're near other churches (such as Santa Chiara and the Duomo) and the central piazza.

It's obviously an easy walk down to San Francesco, but a bit of a hike getting back up. Which is Assisi -- one way or another, you'll have to deal with hills!
