Parisian Minimalist-Chic
Sorry if this is a re-run; didn't seem to post the first time.
Looking for a super-pared-down, minimalist hotel in a "nice" neighborhood. Seems that 99.9% of Parisian hotel rooms have deep-colored wallpaper(with a loud print), yards upon yards of burgundy velvet curtains, boldly patterned bedspreads, and an infinite number of velvet, tasseled pillows tossed with abandon upon every flat surface. And then you have the countless "paintings" all over the place, and the brick-a-brack. I am of the "less is more" school & cannot bare to look at these gloomy, crowded "period" rooms. Looks like ABC Furniture must have a very busy subsidiary in Paris. Any minimalist suggestions would be appreciated. |
My dear, minimalism is out in all but the Scandinavian countries where it has always been the norm rather than a fad.
One more thing, "less is less". |

Jody, You are welcome. I know the feeling, as I get real close to 50, I find myself having to really try hard to recall stuff. You just don't appreicate your eyesight and memory until you start losing it!

It sounds like you are staying in rather expensive hotels, as I've never had a Parisian hotel decorated that way. I would say most of the cheaper hotels are pretty "minimalist", not that that's very attractive most of the time -- just basic plain furniture, often modern or Ikea-ish. The mid-range hotels I stay at have more normal room furniture of some style that is usually wood (probably called transitional or traditional style), but it's not Louis XV and I've never had a hotel with velvet curtains or tassled pillows.
IN addition to above suggestions, the Hotel Montalembert might suit you in the 7th. I've eaten in Joel Robuchon's new place which is pretty modern, so maybe the hotel in the same place (HOtel Pont Royal) is a possibility--being clean and more modern+traditional style, but it is def. not super-pared-down.http://www.hotel-pont-royal.com I think the fairly new Pulitzer Opera in the 9th is kind of Swedish modern style, you might like it, also. If you really want a super pared-down style, a hostel would work. |
Then you'd like Hotel Sainte-Beuve, which I've described at length above in the thread called L'Aubusson vs Sainte Beauve Hotels. Recently redecorated by well known British designer. Simple and lovely.

I think some are misunderstanding the Minimalist Style.
It is definitely not hostel or cheap hotels! "Minimalism is a style of art in which objects are stripped down to their elemental, geometric form, and presented in an impersonal manner" |

Hi Havana: We stayed in a nice hotel recently that was not exactly minimalist but trying to head in that direction. http://www.hotelambassador-paris.com It is very near the old Opera building. Some good deals also.
