Based on other holidays when I have been there, I would guess that bakeries will be open until noon but only tiny convenience shops will be open for eggs, milk, coffe, etc.

Generally no. Get what you need by early afternoon the day before.

It depends on where you will be in Paris.

That's one of the biggest holidays of the year in terms of closures, in general. That and Christmas, and May 1st. Lots of grocery stores aren't even open on Sunday each week, in case you didn't know that.

Actually most supermarkets (not including Monoprix which is variety store) are now open until 13:00 on Sunday with more and more open all day as the new Sunday opening laws begin to kick in. On January 1st, though, just about all of them will be closed. 'Mom & pop' stores will be open because the law allows any place with no salaried employees to open as much as they want -- and they like to take advantage of the other places being closed.

I would guess that bakeries will be open until noon

Bakeries are generally open until 20:00 if they are open at all on the day in question. Parisians want bread straight out of the oven for every meal.

An excellent example of the quirks.
