Paris winter sales -- Jan. 12 to Feb. 22, 05, is this right?

Hi, is this right?

This is what I gather from

http://www.travel-in-france.com/france/article474.html

Does someone know for sure?

Thanks.

Sales usually begin the week following the new year, with some stores starting as early as the 5th or 6th, so the dates listed on "Travel in France" appear to be about right.

YIPPEE!! I'll be there Jan. 15-22. The sales will help offset the loss from our sinking dollar.

Don't forget to apply for your VAT refund, if applicable. That will really add to your savings.

I rememeber reading somewhere that sales don't all start at the same time in France. But I do remember that they had started by this time in 2004. There can really be some good deals in the sales, so that's why I'm asking.

Grasshopper, thanks for bringing that up. What are the guidelines for collecting VAT? Do I have to spend over a certain amount in each shop? I appreciate any info.

If memory serves, you must spend over 175 Euros (?).

If you store is a chain, then you may be able to combine purchases (for example, multiple purchases in Lafayette) -- you should ask about this, and also if the purchases must be made on the same day to qualify.

You can't combine purchases from different stores (not that I know of).

That page was run through an automatic translator which is why the prepositions don't make sense.

The Finance Minister specifies the possible dates for sales, and the local departement then determines exact dates for that area within those limits.

France said they can start 1/12 in 2005, but only a couple depts have announced their official dates (mainly Oise and Yonne between 1/12-2/12). Paris hasn't announced their official dates yet. YOu can count on it for the end of Jan and beg. of Feb., but I wouldn't count on any specific day yet at the tail ends either way. Usually they start about a week earlier, it seems to me, wonder why they are later this year.

They announce the dates by dept. on the France Finance minister's web site www.finances.gouv.fr

Thanks Christina. I'll check again in a couple of weeks. As decadent as it seems, and since I've done it before, I might fly over during the MLK weekend to do some shopping. Obviously I don't want to end up there when there aren't any sales.

Where's the page on the website, by the way, Christina?

I went, but I'm not sure how you got the info.

I made a mistake on the dates I quoted, not that you are going there, but Yonne was 1/12-2/22.

See if this exact URL will work:

http://www.finances.gouv.fr/DGCCRF/index.html?ru=00

on that page, look towards the top middle under "Les Actualites", and you see an item with a bullet saying this:

<<22/11/2004: Premières dates des soldes d'hiver 2005>>

click on that line and it gives you a chart of all areas and their dates -- most aren't filled in yet.

Amazingly, Paris (dept. 75) has been filled in since yesterday or so and is now showing as Jan 12 to Feb 12. MLK weekend should be fine, and it's better to go at the beginning as there isn't as much available towards the end of the period, the best stuff gets sold.

Excellent. Thanks again, Christina!

You're of course right that the best items get snapped up early. Now I just have to convince myself that it's time to go again.

I'm so sad that I'll leave on Jan 9. Does that mean everything will be at regular price until Jan 12?
