Paris: Which canned walking itineraries
 

Hi,<BR><BR>I've found several references on self-guided walking tours of Paris. Some of these are: Fodor's Paris 2001, Fodors Exploring Paris, Frommer's Memorable walks, DK Eyewitness, Passport Paris, Insight Guide, etc. I was wondering which Guidebook folks thought has the best tours. We'll be in Paris for 6 days, so we should be able to get around quiet a bit. By the way, we'll be going in mid-Oct if that influences the choice of book. From a first cursory review of each, I'm favoring Fodor's 2001 supplimented with DK Eyewitness for details and photos.<BR><BR>ps. This will be our first trip to Paris.<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>Billy

My favorite book for walks is 'Walking Paris' by Filles Desmons. It has 30 walks, covering most of Paris plus a few out of the city. It covers a lot of history, takes you to some very interesting places. And there are lots of choices. <BR>If this is your first time to Paris, six days will be barely enough!

Billy, I really like the walking tours in Fodor's 2001-Paris. And yes, Fodor's really has great pictures!! Really enhances that dream of going. <BR><BR>You could either choose to do the "Paris in 5 Days" under the Great Itineraries section or pick & choose from among the "Exploring Paris" section (there are 12 Walking Tours plus the section on Off the Beaten Path that you can coordinate with other walking tours).<BR><BR>Unless, you plan to spend a lot of time in the museums, you could basically do 2 of the walking tours per day. If you want to do the museums, then most of the tours will last a full day, except for the Montmartre & Montparnasse sections which each can be done easily in a 1/2 day. In that case, pick & choose based on what you'd really like to see!!<BR><BR>FOR EXAMPLE ONLY (this is based on closing times & dates):<BR>SUNDAY - Notre Dame to Place de la Concorde<BR>MONDAY - Montmartre (combined w/the Louvre open 'til 9:45 M)<BR>TUESDAY - Eiffel Tower to Arc de Triomphe<BR>WEDNESDAY - Orsay to St-Germain<BR>THURSDAY - Latin Quarter to Ile St-Louis<BR>FRIDAY - Marais District<BR><BR>Hope that helps!! Billy:<BR><BR>My copy of this book is so old it's embarrassing, and I don't even know if it's in print any longer, but if you can get hold of "ParisWalks" by Alison and Sonia Landes, it has wonderful Paris walks in it.

StCirq, are your books like mine? So tattered they're falling apart? I practically have to tape them back together!! LOL!

Time Out has a guide simply entitled "Paris walks". As usual, very good.

Be sure you have an up-to-date version of whatever book you choose. I once took a Frommers Walks book with me to Paris, and although much of the book was useful, every walk contained some incorrect directions. This was probably caused by changes made to the environment after the book was written. <BR><BR>Paris is an old city, but it still undergoes changes that are frequent enough to necessite a "walks" book that gets annual updates.
